In clinical chemistry, medical technologists operate and
analyze data from sophisticated chemical analyzers. Test results
often indicate the presence of serious diseases such as diabetes,
cirrhosis of the liver, heart attack, thyroid conditions, and
fetal respiratory development. The medical technologists provide
information regarding the effectiveness of therapy in heart
disease, asthma, epilepsy, infection, and organ transplantation.
Additionally, screening for wellness such as cholesterol testing,
cystic fibrosis testing, and phenylketonuria (a mental
retardation if not treated), chemical procedures, as are tests
for substances used by drug abusers. The competencies of
chemistry are useful in the forensic (legal) situations and
environmental testing laboratories.
