CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY

Medical Technologist tracks testing results on the computer while performing tests to determine which bacteria are causing infection.

Medical technologists in clinical microbiology identify microorganisms that cause infections and identify antibiotics that are effective in eliminating the microorganisms. Microorganisms include disease-causing (pathogenic) bacteria such as found in wounds, kidney infections and nonpathogenic organisms that often cause problems in people with immune disorders. Parasites, fungi, and viruses are also microorganisms that can cause infectious diseases. DNA technology is used for some detection methods. Medical technologists may use their microbiology competencies to help prevent the spread of infections in a hospital. Additionally, these competencies are useful in the food industry and environmental testing laboratories.
