CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENCES EARLY ADMISSION PROGRAM (CEAP)
Rationale:
SHRP's objectives include to attract, select, and retain the most qualified students for entry into academic programs; encourage interaction of all levels of students; increase number of minority students; and develop a mechanism for retention of minority students.
CEAP assures the student selected of a position in either the Medical Technologist or Cytotechnologist program. CEAP students are provided with enrichment opportunities to enhance their education. These include introduction to internet, and activities with other CEAP and professional phase students.
Number of Students to be Accepted
-
Medical Technology -- 5 per anticipated year of enrollment in the professional phase
-
Cytotechnology -- 2
Criteria for Acceptance into CEAP:
- Freshman or Sophomore at UAB or has been accepted to UAB
- Minimum composite score of 20 on the Enhanced ACT Assessment or equivalent SAT score (unless applicant graduated from high school more than three years ago, in which case no ACT or SAT is required.)
- Minimum grade point average of 3.0 on high school academic subjects in grades 9-12, if a freshman; minimum grade point average of 3.0 for courses taken during freshman year, if a sophomore.
- Completion of application to CEAP (make an appointment with a CLS faculty member to complete application -- deadline is October 1 of freshman or sophomore year).
- Documentation of visit to clinical lab (MT) or cytology lab (CT) or attending CLS Open House (held each Fall).
- Written summary of career goals and why you want to enter the program.

Criteria for Maintaining CEAP Status:
- Maintain minimum overall GPA of 3.0 with no grade less than C.
- Maintain minimum NSM GPA of 3.0 calculated on all hours attempted and with no grade less than C.
- Quarterly academic counseling sessions with assigned CLS advisor.
- Participation in planned CEAP activities or other program activities in which CEAP students are included.
If a student does not meet the maintenance criteria any term at UAB, the student will be placed on academic probation for CEAP. This will not show on the transcript. If the student does not meet the maintenance criteria for more than one term at UAB, the student will be withdrawn from CEAP. If this occurs, the student will be eligible for consideration for admission to the professional phase of the program through the general route.
