BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY

Program Information

Accreditation: Accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (8410 West Bryn Mawr Avenue, Suite 670, Chicago, IL 60631; Telephone (773)714-8880).

Credential Conferred: Diplomas -- The Bachelor of Science degree and a certificate of completion are awarded by the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Professional Certification: Graduates are eligible to apply for the certification examinations of the National Certification Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel (CLS) and the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (MT).

Length of Study: Four academic years comprised of a Preprofessional Phase of six quarters (or four semesters) taken at UAB or elsewhere and a Professional Phase seven quarters taken in SHRP.

Professional Phase Information

Program Entrance Date: Fall term.

Application Deadline: Completed applications received by March 15 preceding the expected date of enrollment are given first priority. Second priority deadline for applications is May 15. Applications received after May 15 are considered on a space-available basis.

An Early Admission Program is available to students who qualify.

Application Procedure: The following materials must be submitted.

To UAB Undergraduate Admissions Office:

• completed UAB undergraduate application form indicating pre-medical technology as major and fee, if applicable. If enrolled at UAB in another major, complete a Change of Major form indicating pre-medical technology as major (form available from Registrar's Office), and
• official transcripts from each college or university attended.

To Medical Technology Program Office, School of Health Related Professions Building, Room 381:

• completed application to the professional phase of the Medical Technology Program (form available from program office).

Requirements for Admission: The student usually will have completed approximately 60 semester hours before transferring to SHRP. Acceptance is based upon the student's academic ability and aptitude for a career in laboratory sciences. The candidate is expected to satisfy the following requirements.

• a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.3 (A=4.0),
• a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.3 in required natural sciences and mathematics and any preprofessional prerequisites, calculated on all hours attempted, and
• if accepted, completion of UAB medical history questionnaire and physical, to include required immunizations, with satisfactory screening by the UAB Medical Center Student Health Service.

For students who have graduated from a NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Sciences Program and are certified as laboratory technicians, an articulation program recognizing technical courses is available.

Essential Requirements: Fundamental tasks that must be performed to successfully complete the program have been outlined and are available upon request from the program.

Program Prerequisites:
Courses must meet the Alabama General Core requirements to be acceptable toward a baccalaureate degree.

* A two-course sequence must be taken in either literature or history.

**Statistics may be taken in either the Mathematics dept (MA180) or the Psychology dept (PY214).
