In today’s academic climate it takes dedication from top to bottom to create and foster an environment of excellence.  We cannot build a strong academic foundation without passionate, dedicated faculty and staff.  The academic excellence demonstrated by our faculty has a direct impact on our students. Just a few weeks ago, we took some time to celebrate excellence in the college at our Second Annual College of Arts and Sciences Scholarship and Awards Luncheon. Over 245 donors, students, UAB administrators, Department chairs and College faculty came together to celebrate our outstanding scholarship students and their achievement and the faculty and community supporters who have helped them along their way. 

Brendan Rice is a senior and the recipient of the Tennant and Susan McWilliams Scholarship.  Brendan is passionate about the issue of food security and wants to one day work to help countries build their capacity to reduce hunger.  Brendan is studying International Studies, French, and Media Studies and is able to structure his academic experience in a way that will allow him to reach his goals.

Elizabeth Casswell is also a senior and was a recipient of one of our Dean’s Scholarships, which were awarded from annual contributions to the college from alumni and friends.  elizabethcaswell        Elizabeth Casswell Elizabeth is completing an Individually Designed Major in Non Profit Management.   Driven by her passion for service, Elizabeth hopes to one day manage a non-profit organization.

Brendan and Elizabeth are just two of the many outstanding students in the college who deserve nothing less than excellence in their educational opportunities.  And our investment in excellence will be returned many times over.  As Elizabeth says in our Scholarship Video, which you can see here, she believes she can change the world one day.  I believe that she, Brendan, and all of our scholarship students can indeed do just that.
