Origins of Delta GammaOur three founders

Delta Gamma was founded in the winter of 1873 in Oxford, Mississippi at the Lewis School for Girls by three friends, Mary Comfort, Anna Boyd and Eva Webb. From the beginning, Hope was the symbol that brought the first Delta Gammas together. In addition to being one of the first seven women's fraternities that came together as a part of the first Panhellenic Conference, Delta Gamma boasts many other firsts among women's fraternities. Delta Gamma remains one of the largest women's fraternities internationally with an extensive alumni network, millions of dollars in scholarship and philanthropy, hundreds of thousands of hours of service, and proud Delta Gammas all over the world. Today, DG has over 144 chapters at colleges around the country and in Canada, spreading its high ideals of friendship, personal responsibility, and social responsibility.

History of the Zeta Xi Chapter

CrestIn the spring of 1990, representatives from Delta Gamma began presentations on the campus of the University of Alabama, Birmingham. These representatives included Barb Probst, Patsy Martens, Kim Martin, Cathy Waggoner, and Beverly Harper.

In June of 1990, Delta Gamma was chosen to colonize at UAB in the fall of 1990. Mary Frances Pack was chosen as the Council Appointed Coordinator for the UAB colony.

October of 1990 brought about the colonization of Zeta Xi, followed by the Zeta Xi chapter of Delta Gamma being installed at the University of Alabama, Birmingham on February 2, 1991 along with Zeta Nu-Montevallo. Four hours after the Zeta Nu initiation, twenty-eight women were initiated Zeta Xi (including one patroness: Mignon Comer Crockard).

The Installation Banquet was held at The Club, a beautiful landmark establishment in Birmingham, and was complete with excellent food, service and a gorgeous view of the city. Barbara Probst served as mistress of ceremonies and more than 200 people attended. Carolyn Toler, chapter president, accepted the charter from President Marilyn Fordham.
