Totaling more than 500, the volunteer team included SOD faculty, residents, students, staff, and alumni; UAB Nursing School faculty and students; local charitable organizations and partner dental clinics; corporate partners; local community dentists and hygienists; and local and state dental associations. During this day of free dental care, we treated the basic dental needs of low-income and underserved people in the Birmingham community at no cost.
With all volunteers and event partners working together, we provided dental services to approximately 350 individuals ranging in age from four to 94. Services included more than 110 restorations, 300 extractions, and 80 cleanings. In addition, oral health exams, medical screenings, and oral health educational materials were provided at no cost to all patients.
This event modeled to all in attendance our profession's responsibility to the community we live in and allowed everyone who participated to experience firsthand the sense of reward often realized when we meet that responsibility and give to others. This is clearly evident in the event video, where both those who gave and those who received were humbled by the experience and appreciative of the opportunity to participate.
