Our Dean and Chair have designated significant resources and support to the Grad Pros program. Our faculty to student ratio is 1:2, which offers tremendous educational opportunities. We have 6 primary full-time prosthodontists associated with the program and 12 residents. Two faculty members are present at most clinical sessions. Our maxillofacial program has an additional 3 maxillofacial prosthodontists.
Dr. Keith E. Kinderknecht, DMD, FACP
Program Director: Graduate Prosthodontics
Dr. Kinderknecht received his dental degree with distinction from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry and practiced general dentistry for 17 years before completing a prosthodontic residency program at the National Naval Dental School in Bethesda, Maryland. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists. Dr. Kinderknecht lectures nationally on all phases of prosthodontics with emphasis on jaw function and dysfunction associated with Temporomandibular Disorders. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Prosthodontics and is a consultant to numerous graduate prosthodontic programs.
Dr. Dan Givan, DMD, PhD, FACP
Assistant Program Director and Associate Chair
Dr. Givan received his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry, and a doctorate in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has completed residencies in both Hospital Dentistry and the specialty of Prosthodontics. He is a board certified prosthodontist and is active in numerous professional organizations including a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists. Dr. Givan is very active in patient care in the Faculty Group Practice and his emphasis is in esthetic and functional full mouth rehabilitation with fixed, removable, and implant prosthodontics.
Dr. Perng-Ru Liu, DDS, MS, DMD
Professor and Chair
Dr. Perng-Ru Liu is a 1985 graduate of Chung-Shan Medical University, Taiwan. He received his Prosthodontic Certificate, MS Degree and DMD Degree from UAB School of Dentistry. Dr. Liu has lectured nationally and internationally on computer generated ceramic restorations, esthetic dentistry, and implant dentistry. In 1997 and 2005 Dr. Liu was the recipient of the UAB President's Award for Excellence in Teaching, the highest university-wide honor for teaching excellence in the School of Dentistry.
Dr. Jean O’Neal, DMD, MS
Dr. O'Neal retired from UAB, School of Dentistry on September 30, 2009, her dedication to dentistry and teaching has brought her back one day a week to teach in our Graduate Prosthodontics Clinic. Dr. O’Neal received her dental and prosthodontic training at the University of Alabama. Dr. O’Neal has extensive experience in full-mouth rehabilitation and esthetic dentistry. She lectures extensively on this topic.
The heart of any program is its people, and we are lucky to have support staff who are dedicated to the service of our patients and to our educational mission, even if they won’t allow photographs. We have 2 full-time assistants and 2 receptionists associated with the combined pros/perio clinic.
