Our goal is to optimize oral health through excellent care performed by a highly experienced patient care team.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a surgical specialty that includes the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of diseases, injuries and aesthetic aspects of the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the mouth. Our physicians specialize in:

  • developmental and congenital facial deformities
  • reconstructive surgery of the face
  • restoration of the edentulous patients
  • implants and extensive facial infections
  • oral cancers

In addition to these highly specialized procedures, we also provide more general services to the patients including:

  • extraction of teeth and impacted wisdom teeth
  • laser surgery
  • management of TMJ disorders
  • facial pain
  • facial trauma
  • facial cosmetic surgery
  • obstructive sleep apnea.

Our oral and maxillofacial surgeons frequently work alongside other specialists including dentists, orthodontists, prosthodontists, radiologists, pathologists, oncologists, ENT (ear, nose, and throat) surgeons, neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons and other medical professionals.

UAB Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery patients are served in several locations including UAB School of Dentistry and faculty practice sites at The Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital, UAB Medicine Hoover Clinic, and Children's of Alabama.

    University of Alabama School of Dentistry

    The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic has 15 operating rooms, a recovery area and complete supporting facilities and equipment. Approximately 50 patients a day are treated in this clinic for exodontia, management of infections, cysts, benign neoplasm, facial fractures, pre and postoperative care and other oral and maxillofacial surgical conditions.

    The Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital

    The Kirklin Clinic is a member of the UAB Health System, whose physicians and programs have gained national and international recognition for their excellence. The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic is on the first floor and is utilized by the faculty members for their private practice. Senior residents assist the faculty members in seeing their private patients in order to gain experience in the area of private practice. The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic at The Kirklin Clinic was opened in the spring of 1997. This clinic has six operating/exam rooms with complete supporting facilities and equipment. The private practice patient load encompasses the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery including general oral surgery, orthognathic surgery, maxillofacial trauma, temporomandibular joint disorders, craniofacial deformities, oral cancer, and facial cosmetic surgery. The Kirklin Clinic also houses an outpatient operating room which has 14 fully equipped operating suites. A majority of the same day surgery that requires general anesthesia is performed here.

    Hoover Clinic

    UAB Oral and Facial Surgery Hoover off Highway 150 is a new state of the art facility. It is equipped with three operating suites and associated consultation rooms for outpatient oral and maxillofacial surgery. It is also an all digital office integrated with the University Hospital system. UAB Health Systems patients can be seen at either location. The full scope of the specialty is practiced in this clinic. It is owned and operated by the UAB Health Service Foundation.

    University Hospital

    UAB Hospital is the centerpiece of the UAB Health System. Located on the University of Alabama at Birmingham campus among major research centers and clinics, UAB Hospital provides patients with a complete range of primary and specialty care services. As a university hospital, a major center for clinical research, and the home of some of the top medical programs in America, the 1,207 bed facility also offers patients the most up-to-date treatments and innovations in health care. A majority of inpatient surgical procedures are performed at the University Hospital where we have scheduled block time. UAB is the only Level 1 ACS Trauma Center in Alabama and receives about 6,500 trauma activations per year, making it one of the nation’s busiest trauma centers.

    UAB Highlands Hospital is a 219 bed hospital less than a mile south of UAB Hospital. Due to its smaller size and convenient parking, it is very suitable for patients and their families. Many of our faculty maintain a busy operating room schedule at UAB Highlands.
