One Cinco de Mayo party at UAB not only marked the Mexican battle victory, but it also marked the second annual Fiesta Ball, a fund-raising project of the Young Supporters Board of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. Sponsored by Harbert Management Corporation, Thompson Tractor Company, and Robinson Adams Insurance, the event was held on May 3, 2008, at Ted’s Garage.
Funds raised at this year’s ball surpassed last year’s total by more than $10,000. The money will be used to fund a young cancer researcher at UAB. Because federal funding for cancer research has declined in recent years, young scientists find it increasingly difficult to obtain grants when competing for them against more established researchers. By receiving funds from the Young Supporters Board, young investigators have the chance to perform research that will bring in more federal grants and help Alabama cancer patients.
“My thanks go to the Young Supporters Board for their energy and enthusiasm in hosting this event,” says UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center Director Edward Partridge, M.D. “The money they raised will enable a young, promising scientist to jump-start a career in cancer research, which is a truly outstanding thing. Support such as this is essential to the cancer center’s future.”
