Athletics Auction Exceeds Expectations

The fifth annual Blazer Club Dinner and Live Auction on August 24, 2008, raised nearly $115,000—a record-breaking $10,000 more than last year—to support Blazer athletic programs and scholarships for student-athletes. Guestswere treated to a dinner and wine at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and WineBar.
Ken Jackson presided over the live auction, which featured sports packages, weekend getaways, and art. Items included tickets to the NCAA Basketball Final Four games in Detroit, Neil Callaway football and Mike Davis basketball packages, tickets to theMasters final round in Augusta, a Conference USA basketball trip, and many more. Successful bids for live-auction items totaled $130,000. The highest-ticket item was a beautiful pair of male and female dragon sculptures byAlabama artist Frank Fleming that went for $42,000.
“We are very appreciative of the tremendous loyalty and generosity displayed by UAB supporters and fans,” says Shannon Ealy, senior associate athletic director. “The UAB athletics auction is a fun-filled evening that allows us to gather the Blazer faithful for camaraderie and fellowship. Words cannot express our gratitude to our donors for their outstanding support of this event and their commitment to raising money for scholarships for UAB student-athletes.”
