25 Years of Honors

University Honors Program Leadership Council and Scholarship Reception

The University Honors Program (UHP) Leadership Council and Scholarship Reception recognized scholarship support provided by donors as well as their leadership and advocacy over the years on behalf of the program and its students. UAB President Carol Garrison hosted the reception at the Woodward House on April 15 in honor of the UHP’s 25th anniversary. Garrison and Michael Sloane, Ph.D., director of the UHP, spoke at the reception. Graduating student Larry Lawal also gave a speech to the donors on behalf of all UHP scholarship recipients.

“After four years of being involved in the UHP, one thing that I am both extremely proud of and continually amazed by is the impact our small program has on UAB and our community,” said Lawal, a Goldwater Scholar, William J. Rushton Scholar, and former co-editor of the undergraduate magazine Inquiro. “Honors students have a high level of campus involvement and volunteerism and consistently win nationally competitive awards and fellowships. I know for a fact that my peers and I would not be able to maintain academic excellence in the classroom while pursuing extracurricular endeavors with an equal level of dedication without these scholarships.”
