Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the VIVA Health Starlight Gala

Award-winning singer and actress Queen Latifah performed a program of jazz and soul standards as well as highlights from her most recent album at the 10th VIVA Health Starlight Gala, the largest annual fund-raiser for the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center (ASC).

The 2009 “Patron of the Arts” honorees were the past gala chairs who helped to make the ASC what it is today: Theresa Bruno and Rose Lee, Betty Goldstein and Rae Trimmier, Frances Gorrie, Wyona Hamby and Kim Jemison, Karen Lloyd, Patty McDonald, Barbara O’Neal and Lyndy Rogers, Carole Pizitz, and Jacque Shaia. The past chairs were recognized on stage prior to Queen Latifah’s performance in the order of the years in which they served. They were joined by this year’s co-chairs, Kate Cotton and Sheri Cook.

All guests enjoyed music from Jazz Trio, and those who attended the dinner danced the night away to the sounds of Rocket City Jazz Orchestra. VIVA Health, UAB, and The Birmingham News were among the sponsors of the event.
