Tommy Weatherford, D.V.M., D.M.D., and Kent Palcanis, D.D.S., have each personally made significant contributions to create the Dr. Tommy Weatherford/Dr. Kent Palcanis Endowed Support Fund. The fund has been created in hopes of establishing an endowed professorship and ultimately an endowed chair.

From 1970 to 1984, Weatherford served the School of Dentistry as director of advanced dental education programs, and he also led the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics from 1976 to 1996. He received the Moren Fuller Award in 2003 from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry Alumni Association, and he is also the 2005 recipient of the American Academy of Periodontology’s Outstanding Periodontal Educator Award and the 2006 recipient of the Alabama Dental Association’s Most Excellent Fellow Award for outstanding service and commitment to the dental profession.

Palcanis, who was a professor in the Department of Periodontology and associate dean for academic affairs, served as president of the Alabama Dental Association from 2006 to 2007 and is currently the executive director of the American Board of Periodontology. He is a recipient of the Clinical Research Award in Periodontology, Special Citation, and Presidential and Fellowship awards from the American Academy of Periodontology; he also was named a Most Excellent Fellow by the Alabama Dental Association and is a member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy Dental Honorary and a fellow in the American and International Colleges of Dentists.

“The outstanding contributions that these two individuals have made to dental education in general, and to the School of Dentistry in particular, leave a legacy beyond compare; they exemplify teaching in its purest form,” says Huw F. Thomas, Ph.D., dean of the School of Dentistry. “Their knowledge, skill, enthusiasm, compassion, and unselfishness have touched thousands of lives, and we are all the better for it.”
