Photographer David Hilliard presented an overview of his career and studio practice on September 9, 2010, in the UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall as the 2010 John Morton Visiting Artist in the UAB Department of Art and Art History. A reception for Hilliard followed in the UAB Visual Arts Gallery.

John Morton established the visiting artist program to give UAB students the opportunity to experience art firsthand. In addition to his support for the visiting artist series, Morton also has made his own significant collection available for students to see and study.

“We are deeply grateful to John Morton for making this experience available for our students,” says Erin Wright, chair of the Department of Art and Art History. “It is an invaluable addition to our curriculum.”

Hilliard constructs panoramic photographs using a series of single images. He earned his bachelor of fine arts degree at Massachusetts College of Art and his master of fine arts degree from Yale University School of Art. On his Web site, Hilliard describes his work as a documentation of his life and the lives of those around him, “recording events and attempting to create order in a sometimes chaotic world.” Hilliard is represented by Jackson Fine Art in Atlanta.
