Generous donors got a firsthand look at how their support contributes to the progress of the UAB School of Public Health at the 2009 scholarship luncheon, held on October 2. A prime example of this progress was the presentation of the Billy R. Cox Endowed Scholarship, established to assist students in the school who demonstrate an interest in public-health issues for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender populations. The inaugural award went to Reverend Tommie Watkins.

The luncheon also featured remarks from Stan McDuffie, M.P.H., 2009 Alumnus of the Year, and Taylor Poston, a Sonny Callahan Endowed Scholarship winner. Among the other scholarships awarded at the luncheon were the Bill and Judy Bridgers Endowed Scholarship, the Isaac E. Capilouto Endowed Scholarship, the Ken Dillon Endowed Scholarship, the Robert P. Ginter Endowed Scholarship, the Herman Lehman Jr. Endowed Scholarship, the Robert and Charlotte Lowder Endowed Scholarship, the Ira L. Myers Scholarship, the Donna Lee Rickert Endowed Scholarship, the Vernon E. Rose Endowed Scholarship, the Kathleen Ellis Ryals Endowed Scholarship, and the Irtaza and Shana Siddique Endowed Scholarship.

“The annual scholarship luncheon honors some of our most remarkable students, many of whom would not be able to pursue their dreams of a career in public health without the commitment of so many donors,” says Max Michael, dean of the School of Public Health. “We are grateful and indebted to our donors for their belief and trust in our school.”
