The Alliance of the Alabama Dental Association may have disbanded, but its legacy of service and generosity will live on at the School of Dentistry. The Alliance of the Alabama Dental Association Endowed Scholarship honors the organization’s exemplary support of dental education at the school.
Composed of spouses of dentists practicing in communities throughout Alabama, the alliance has long supported the school through generous gifts. For 70 years, members of the alliance volunteered countless hours of service to numerous dental health projects throughout the state, including a campaign against smokeless tobacco; programs in nursing homes promoting proper denture care and oral hygiene; and education for new mothers about early childhood caries, a condition that causes decayed teeth in infants.
“The Alliance of the Alabama Dental Association, through its many varied activities, has long been a supporter of the School of Dentistry,” says Huw F. Thomas, Ph.D., dean of the school. “Despite the fact that they have disbanded, their continued support through the endowment of a scholarship will benefit our students in perpetuity. We are most grateful for this legacy.”
