More than 100 alumni, faculty, family, and friends gathered at the Vestavia Country Club last spring to honor and celebrate Howard Houser, Ph.D., and his commitment to education and mentoring. School of Health Professions (SHP) alumnus Jon Vice served as master of ceremonies and announced the completion of the Howard Houser Endowed Professorship in the SHP.
Houser, associate dean for faculty and staff development in the SHP, is a highly acclaimed and respected faculty member. He was founding chairman of UAB’s health services administration graduate program and has more than 35 years of teaching and research in the field. He has made a great impact on the evolution of health care throughout the state, nation, and world.

The creation of the professorship will extend Houser’s legacy and make his innovative spirit a permanent and integral part of the UAB SHP. The school and the UAB Department of Health Services Administration established the professorship through generous donations from many health administration alumni, faculty, colleagues, and health-care organizations.
“Through 40 years of dedication to his students and a passionate commitment to seeing health care delivered with dignity and respect to all people, Dr. Houser has embodied the true spirit of his profession and the school,” says Harold P. Jones, Ph.D., dean of the SHP. “This professorship will allow us to continue to grow the teaching ranks of those in the health administration program committed to those ideals.”
