Sextons Create UAB Honors Academy Scholarship

The Britt and Susan Sexton Endowed Honors Scholarship will provide outstanding educational opportunities for bright young students who will be the leaders of the next generation and who will make incalculable contributions to the betterment of communities throughout the state, nation, and world. The Sextons created the scholarship for the UAB Honors Academy through the Sexton Charitable Foundation.

Mr. Sexton, a member of the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees, says, “Susan and I are pleased to partner with UAB in educating and supporting our new generation of leaders, teachers, researchers, and entrepreneurs. It’s exciting to be in a position to offer financial support for higher education needs.”

Residents of Decatur, Alabama, the Sextons are highly regarded for their outstanding support of higher education in Alabama and ongoing contributions to numerous worthwhile causes and organizations in their hometown of Decatur and throughout the state. Mr. Sexton is the chief executive officer of Sexton Inc., a family investment company engaged in private equity, real estate, and venture capital; Corporate Billing LLC; and FS Financial Inc. He also is managing member of Sexton Investments LLC and president of the Sexton Charitable Foundation, established in 1995.

“The generosity of the Sexton family will make it easier for honors students to afford their education, and for the Honors Academy to recruit and retain well-rounded students,” says Philip Way, Ph.D., associate provost for undergraduate programs. “In recognizing student engagement in activities inside and outside the classroom, the scholarship underscores the hallmark of honors education at UAB.”

Mr. Sexton adds, “My father was a recipient of a university scholarship, becoming the first in his family to attend college. The scholarship was his foundation, his opportunity to grow into the man he became. He never lost his perspective on the importance, passing this insight on to me. Our desire in establishing this scholarship is to pass on a wonderful gift.”

The UAB Honors Academy offers an enriching college experience through challenging classes and co-curricular experiences; individual attention from faculty and academic advisors; and a community of like-minded, motivated students. The academy’s programs are designed to encourage students’ intellectual exploration and personal growth and to guide their planning for their unique futures.
