Deserving female students who are enrolled in a degree-granting program through the UAB Honors Academy will benefit from a new scholarship established by the Birmingham-based Woman’s Club House Board of Directors of the Third District of the Alabama Federation of Women’s Clubs (AFWC) Inc. The endowed honors scholarship is made possible through a $100,000 gift from the organization.
“We look forward to keeping alive the memories of the women who met in the Woman’s Club House through the young women who will receive this scholarship,” says Helen Copeland, chairman of the Woman’s Club House Scholarship Committee.
The Woman’s Club House, located at 2908 Highland Avenue, was the headquarters for the women’s clubs of the Third District of the AFWC for more than 60 years. Over the years, the various federated women’s clubs met there to execute the organization’s mission to promote literacy and education, health, and support for the arts in the Birmingham area. But in 2004, as the number of active clubs continued to decline, the Woman’s Club House Board made the decision to sell the beloved club house. In 2009, they decided to dissolve the Woman’s Club House Board.
To pay tribute to the Woman’s Club House board members and their tradition of volunteer service, the board voted to establish an endowed scholarship for women students in the UAB Honors Academy through the sale of the club house. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate fervor for community involvement and service-related volunteer activities.
“We are thrilled that the Woman’s Club House board members have chosen to perpetuate their tradition of paying it forward by establishing this endowed scholarship at UAB,” says Daphne Powell, director of stewardship. “The women who will receive this award will be told of the philanthropic legacy of the Birmingham women’s clubs and will no doubt continue this legacy throughout their lives and careers. We are incredibly thankful for this significant investment in the future of countless young women who will attend UAB.”
