Alabama Power Foundation and Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, along with UAB, were the early leadership givers in a $250,000 capital equipment campaign for Public Radio WBHM 90.3 FM/WSGN 91.5 FM. The proceeds from the campaign will help WBHM continue to deliver award-winning regional journalism and public media programming on the air and online at www.wbhm.org with the most reliable and best possible quality signal, and to keep up with advances in technology.

On March 23, the station provided the opportunity for others to join the campaign through a special election-year benefit performance by The Capitol Steps at UAB’s Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center—“Capitol for Capital!” Helping to sponsor the show by the comedy troupe were Altec Industries, Lawler Ballard Van Durand, Vulcan Materials, and the UAB National Alumni Society. Other support was provided by the Birmingham Business Alliance, The J. Clyde, and International Wines.

The radio station, a flagship asset of the Birmingham community, is a listener-supported service of UAB that operates in partnership with Gadsden State Community College and is home to the Alabama Radio Reading Service for the blind and print-impaired.

“We could not continue as an important news, entertainment, and information resource for north central Alabama without the support of our community,” says Kristi Lamont Ellis, WBHM interim general manager. “We are extremely grateful that our capital campaign donors recognize the value of public radio and are willing to help us in this way.”
