Who We Are

Equal Access Birmingham is a student run-initiative in the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education of the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Through EAB, students engage in co-curricular service experiences with the underserved and vulnerable populations of Birmingham, AL.

The Future of Medicine

As a part of the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education, EAB meets the challenge of providing service-learning to medical students that already have a full schedule. However, the educational outcomes can have a lasting impact.

Through our work, EAB exposes medical students to clinical and socioeconomic factors that contribute to health disparities. In this way we can accomplish a much larger goal: To train future doctors to provide quality care for all individuals and continue to work in underserved communities into their careers. This outlet provides medical students with the opportunity to work with and learn from their community. While the medical students that volunteer with EAB are a diverse group and will travel on to different paths as physicians, they will always take with them the skills and knowledge that they learned with Equal Access Birmingham.

Our Vision: The Clinic

We recognize that Equal Access Birmingham can only meet a small portion of the healthcare needs of the underserved in Birmingham. However, in the midst of this challenge, there is hope.

After years of discussion with the School of Medicine and community partners, EAB is proud to announce plans for a student-run and student-staffed free clinic, located within the Church of the Reconciler in Downtown Birmingham, AL. This clinic will offer a tremendous opportunity for students to not only reinforce their skills and knowledge, but also learn about all of the administrative work of a clinic and most importantly about the longitudinal care of patients. The new clinic will represent a turning point as our potential for serving the needs of Birmingham continues to grow.

This past March, the UASOM Student Senate hosted the Best Medicine Show, a fundraiser for EAB. Through tireless efforts, they were able to raise more than $60,000 for the opening of our clinic at the Church of the Reconciler. With this funding, we will be able to have an operational clinic by Fall 2012.
