The English conversation classes take place during UAB’s fall, spring, and summer terms. In fall and spring, classes take place on Tuesdays from 12:30 to 1:45 pm and also from 7:30 to 9:00 pm; in summer, classes take place on Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9:00 pm. Most students attend either during the day or in the evening. Registration takes place at the first class and also throughout the semester. Based on a short oral test, students are placed in levels 1, 2, 3 or 4.

These English conversation classes are a well-established tradition within UAB’s international community, having taken place on campus for over 20 years. In 2011, these classes moved from the Smolian International House to the School of Education. Now hosted by Education's Department of Curriculum and Instruction, the English conversation classes serve as a lab school for the master’s program in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). Classes are taught by graduate students being trained to become ESL teachers. They are also taught by community volunteers.

During the past three years, the conversation classes have been attended by participants from over 40  countries. They have come from Argentina, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Germany, Guatemala, Guinea, Honduras, Hungary, India, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, St. Vincent, Spain, Sudan, Syria, Thailand, Turkey, U.S., Ukraine, VenezuelaVietnam, and Yemen.

UAB's English conversation classes are offered at no cost to the participants. This free service is available thanks to the wonderful instructors (graduate students and community volunteers) who dedicate their time and talent for helping others to learn English.
