How do I apply for School of Education scholarships?

You must complete the scholarship application form which is available online.  On the application, you must select the scholarship(s) for which you would like to apply.  If you are unsure whether or not you meet the requirements and/or preference criteria of the scholarship(s), please apply regardless.  The selection committee will verify applicant eligibility.

What scholarships are available?

We have over 15 scholarships available for undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Education.  Visit the list of scholarships for additional scholarship details.

Do I fill out separate applications for each scholarship?

No, please submit only one scholarship application.  You will select the scholarships you are applying for on the application.

What are the requirements and eligibility for the scholarships?

It depends on the scholarship.  Please view the scholarship list to review the requirement(s) and preference criteria.

How do I know which scholarships I can apply for?

How do I submit my letters of recommendation?

The letters of recommendation are optional.  If you are submitting them, you may send them electronically or by mail.  There is a place on the scholarship application form for you to attach the recommendation letters, or you may mail them to:

How and when will I be notified if I get a scholarship?

Scholarship applicants will be notified of the Scholarship Committee’s decision by April 30, 2014.

When and how will I get my scholarship money?

Scholarship awards will go toward the recipient’s tuition and fees (through the UAB Office of Financial Aid) for terms in which he or she is enrolled as a student in the School of Education.  Any scholarship funds in excess of the amount required for tuition and fees will be disbursed to the student for books, supplies, or school-related expenses when the terms of the particular scholarship allow.

Also, recipients of SOE scholarships may be eligible to receive other forms of student financial aid for which they qualify.  Please contact the financial aid office for more information at finaid@uab.edu or (205) 934-8223.

Are there any UAB scholarships for education students that are administered outside of the SOE?
Currently, the CESAME program provides scholarships for AMP students preparing to teach science or mathematics. Visit the CESAME website for additional details.

Beta Chi ESG Clint Bruess Health Education Scholarship

Applicants for the Beta Chi Eta Sigma Gamma Clint Bruess Health Education scholarship must be currently enrolled in, or admitted, to the undergraduate Health Education program in the department of Human Studies at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Applicants should demonstrate solid academic promise and have earned at least a 3. 3 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). Preference will be given to members of the Beta Chi Chapter of Eta Sigma Gamma.

The Catharine Comer Friend Endowed Scholarship

Recipients must be currently enrolled in, or admitted, to a degree-granting program in the SOE.  They should demonstrate solid academic promise and have earned at least an overall 3.0 GPA (based on a 4.0 scale) in coursework prior to application. Preference will be given to students who express a desire to teach in Alabama schools located in urban settings that serve predominantly disadvantaged students after graduation.  Also, preference will be given to students participating in the Urban Education Project.  Additionally, preference will be given to those deserving financial assistance as determined by the UAB Office of Student Financial Aid.

The Layla Ghabayen Education Scholarship

Applicants must be enrolled in or admitted to the Early Childhood Education/Elementary Education Program in the School of Education and must maintain a 3.0 GPA.

The Virginia Horns-Marsh Scholarship

Preference will be given to Early Childhood Education and Development of Health Education/Health Promotion students. In the absence of such an applicant, exceptional doctoral students in the School of Education followed by exceptional graduate students in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education or Secondary Education will be eligible Recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA in all coursework and the scholarship is based on merit, character and potential for success.

The Dr. Delbert H. and Dr. Roberta Long School of Education Endowed Scholarship

Applicants must be enrolled or admitted to TEP as an undergraduate or in the Alternative Masters Program and maintain a 3.0 GPA. Applicants must have successful work and/or leadership experience and must demonstrate financial need as determined by the UAB Office of Student Financial Aid.

The Artie Manning Memorial Scholarship

The Artie Manning Memorial Scholarship was established by Dr. Mary Anne Manning in memory of her son, Artie Manning. Applicants of the Manning Scholarship must be learning and/or physically challenged. In the absence of such applicants, recipients must be preparing to teach learning and/or physically challenged individuals. Recipients must be accepted into TEP or a degree-seeking education program in the graduate school of the School of Education, must be full-time and have completed 24 hours (undergraduate) or 18 hours (graduate), must show financial need as determined by the UAB Office of Student Financial Aid and must maintain a 3.0 GPA.

The Maryann Manning Endowed Literacy Scholarship

Applicants should be currently enrolled in or admitted to a degree seeking program in UAB School of Education. Preference will be given to those involved with quality literacy instruction in pre-K-6 and to students who maintain a 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to those who show financial need as determined by UAB Office of Student Financial Aid.

The Kathryn Cramer Morgan Memorial Scholarship

Applicants should be enrolled in the School of Education at UAB and must demonstrate solid academic promise. Visiting scholars or professors may be funded.

The National Alumni Society Dean’s Scholarship

The National Alumni Society Dean’s Scholarship was given by the UAB National Alumni Society. The National Alumni Society Dean’s Scholarship is a school-wide scholarship and is open to students currently enrolled in or admitted to a degree-granting program in the School of Education who have demonstrated solid academic promise and leadership qualities, and have at least an overall 3.0 grade point average.

Jack Tribble Scholarship

Recipient must be enrolled in the School of Education and majoring in physical education. The recipient should show financial need as determined by the UAB Office of Student Financial Need.

The Dr. Eddie P. Ort Endowed Award

Applicants must have faculty advisor’s approval to begin Ed.S. Research Project. Preference will be given to students beginning their research project. If no first time research students apply, students already engaged in their research project will be eligible. Preference will be given to applicants with teaching or other professional experience commensurate the goals of their respective program fields within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Additional preference will be given to applicants currently employed in their respective field. Recipients should have a strong academic record of performance, and evidence of continued professional excellence will be expected.

The Frances M. Owens Endowed Scholarship

Applicants must be currently enrolled in, or admitted to, a degree-seeking undergraduate program in the UAB School of Education. Preference will be given to entering freshmen student and students with ADD/ADHD registered through UAB Disability Support Service. Applicants must be full-time students meaning they must, over the course of the academic year, successfully complete 24 semester hours at the undergraduate level.

The Joyce G. Sibley Educational Computing Award

Preference is given to students that do not own a computer, maintain a 3.25 GPA and are a junior or senior admitted to the teacher education program or a student admitted to the Alternative Masters program. The Joyce G. Sibley Educational Computing Award recipient is awarded a laptop computer.

The Mildred, Mack & Blanche Stewart Teacher Education Endowed Scholarship

Applicants must have graduated from the Jefferson County Public School System, or Spain Park, Leeds, Hewitt-Trussville, or any high school in Bibb, Blount, Cullman, St. Clair, Shelby, Tuscaloosa or Walker Counties. Priority will be given to entering freshman followed by transfer students from community colleges that attended previously mentioned schools. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA and a 22 ACT/1030 SAT score. Applicants must apply and be accepted into TEP during junior year and be seeking certification from the State Department of Education.

The Ruth M. Strong Scholarship

Applicants must be accepted in the TEP as an undergraduate or as an Alternative Masters student. Recipients must demonstrate financial need as determined by the UAB Office of Student Financial Aid. Preference will be given to underrepresented, low-income and minority students.

The Tevendale Family Scholarship

Applicants of the scholarship must be full time undergraduate students in a degree-granting program in the UAB School of Education. Recipient must maintain a 3.0 GPA in UAB coursework and must demonstrate financial need as determined by the UAB Office of Student Financial Aid. Preference will be given to first generation college students and to students who are active in their communities, including the UAB community.

Glenda R. Elliott Endowed Scholarship 

Applicants of the scholarship must be a graduate student in the counselor education program in the School of Education.  Applicants must complete the department application and meet the requirements. Applications can be found here .

School of Education Alumni Scholarship

Applicants should be currently enrolled in or admitted to a degree seeking program in UAB School of Education. Preference will be given to those involved with quality literacy instruction in education and to students who maintain a 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to those who show financial need as determined by UAB Office of Student Financial Aid.
