Presently, I am an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education. I hold a bachelors, masters, and doctorate in mathematics education from Auburn University. I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in methods for teaching middle and high school mathematics, as well as mathematics content courses primarily taken by teacher education majors.

My research and service activities relate to promoting inquiry-based instruction in mathematics teaching. I have collaborated with colleagues in the UAB Department of Mathematics, the Mathematics Department at Birmingham Southern College, and teachers and administrators in the UAB service region as part of the Greater Birmingham Mathematics Partnership. The GBMP has grown from a National Science Foundation Grant originally awarded in 2004 and has directly impacted hundreds of K-12 mathematics teachers since it began. Besides promoting inquiry-based instruction, the GBMP has conducted research to document effective practices in mathematics teaching.

I taught mathematics at Spencer High School in Columbus, Georgia before completing my graduate work and coming to UAB. I enjoyed the diverse environment at Spencer which served students from military families as well as a cross section of south Columbus students. While on the faculty at UAB, I have been actively involved in Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics, having served in several leadership capacities including as a former president. I am currently President of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators of Alabama, an organization of primarily university level teacher educators in Alabama.

Outside of the work environment, I enjoy rooting on the UAB Blazers in football and basketball. I also enjoy pursuits in the great outdoors harkening back to my roots as a farm boy from south Alabama.
