The School of Engineering and UAB Online are working together to offer you a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Engineering. This Ph.D. program takes advantage of the world-renowned research centers across UAB by providing a robust curriculum and faculty expertise from many research areas. In today’s work force, students must be educated in more than one area to remain competitive and have successful careers whether they are in academia or from industry. Companies are particularly interested in graduates with an education that emphasizes breadth of knowledge as well as depth in a particular field. Today’s professionals must be able to effectively function between disciplines in order to keep up with rapid market shifts and technological advances. The Interdisciplinary Engineering program offers students a foundation for utilizing methods and insights from several fields of study and combining them into novel approaches for solving today’s problems.

Benefit from a High Quality, Interdisciplinary Research and a Rigorous Academic Curriculum with Faculty from a Variety of Disciplines.Interdisciplinary collaborations between the School of Engineering, School of Medicine, the Schools of Business and Public Health and the College of Arts and Sciences engage students in a curriculum and research topic that promotes study in two or more disciplines.
There are two tracks offered by the program: Computational Engineering and Environmental Health and Safety Engineering. The Computational Engineering track provides students an extensive foundation and innovation opportunities in interdisciplinary aspects of enabling technologies including computer aided geometry design, computational fluid dynamics, computational structural dynamics, and many more. Students in the Environmental Health and Safety Engineering track investigate the human and environmental mechanisms which influence environmental, human, and ecosystem health and safety. Students then learn and apply the skills needed to evaluate and implement prevention and remediation strategies for solving health and safety problems.
What Career Opportunities Would I Have?Current students in the program come from diverse backgrounds and interests including, but not limited to, biomedical engineering, virtual reality, business management, power generation, nursing, physics, and water treatment. Graduates of the Interdisciplinary Engineering Ph.D. Program have been successful in the following fields, as well as others.
