VPP On-Demand Safety Certificate ProgramUAB Professional Studies presents a unique first of its kind, totally online, Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) best practices certificate program, endorsed by the Voluntary Protection Programs Participants’ Association (VPPPA) – “...the premier global safety and health organization, is dedicated to cooperative occupational safety, health and environmental management systems. VPPPA is a member-based association, supporting worksites across the U.S. in their efforts to receive and maintain VPP status.” This certificate program is strategically aligned with VPPPA’s mission for World-Class Safety Excellence and will provide students with best practices for identifying leading indicators with hazard analysis and risk assessment techniques. Students will learn the leadership skills needed to guide a safety culture change by example or to “lead from behind” or to manage from the middle. Upon completion of this certificate program, students may expect to be fully prepared to work through an OSHA VPP process, using best practices to achieve or maintain VPP status at their facility.
SYSS 261A.1 Introduction to System Safety Management PlansCourse presents fundamental concepts of system safety, including the basics of hazard identification and risk assessment. The interplay between organizational culture and error provocative environments is explored. The business case for VPP is established with a study of the true cost of a disaster. The importance of developing a safety management system, including annual planning, goals & objectives is covered. Credits: 0.5 CEU
SYSS 261B.1 Management Leadership and Employee InvolvementThe critically important subject of leadership and organizational culture includes a discussion of management, labor and collective bargaining. The role of visionary leadership in transformational change is covered with particular focus on identifying early signs of "drift into danger." Other topics of inquiry include authority, employee engagement and line accountability. Contractor management, emergency program planning and employee training are discussed. Credits: 0.5 CEU
SYSS 261C.1 Work Site AnalysesStudents learn best practices in incident investigation and root cause analysis. An overview of industrial hygiene, including expectations and best practices is provided. Other topics of inquiry include pre-use analysis, value-added routine inspections, employee hazard reporting and correction tracking systems. The importance of trend analysis with leading versus lagging indicators is discussed. Credits: 0.5 CEU
SYSS 262A.1 Hazard Identification and ControlFundamental concepts of hazard identification and control are explored within the context of best practices "Hierarchy of Control" and the concept of acceptable risk. Two hazard analysis techniques are covered: preliminary hazard analysis (PHA) and health hazard analysis (HHA). A primer on process safety is provided, including preventive and predictive maintenance. Credits: 0.5 CEU
SYSS 262B.1 Advanced Safety and Health TrainingCourse explores the effect of acoustics and vibration on the human body and basic ergonomics. Best practices in occupational health care, supervisor and manager training, as well as, line employee and PPE training are discussed. Training needs analyses are addressed within the context of program development and delivery plan. Credits: 0.5 CEU
SYSS 262C.1 Continuous ImprovementThe criticality of developing a culture of continuous improvement is explored. Components of such a culture include attention to maintainability, reliability and life cycle management. Assessments include internal audits, self-evaluations and site inspections. The role of volunteerism and special government employees are discussed, particularly within the context of OSHA's VPP Program and the VPPPA. Credits: 0.5 CEU
