Intensive English Program (IEP)

The Intensive English Program at the UAB English Language Institute (ELI) offers intensive English language instruction to non-native English speakers. The program is designed to prepare students for university coursework, but it also will enhance the use of English in the workplace or help improve general English skills.

The IEP at the ELI offers quality instruction, small classes, and ample opportunity to practice the skills learned in the classroom. In particular, the IEP is designed to prepare students for success in UAB’s numerous undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs. The IEP also helps full-time students with orientation to life at UAB and in Birmingham.

The IEP follows the UAB academic calendar and offers three full semesters of study per year. There are also two 8-week sessions available for short-term students.

Conditional admission to a UAB undergraduate program is available if a student meets all academic requirements other than English and is admitted to the IEP program. Visit UAB Undergraduate Admissions for more information.

Part-time or full-time study options are available. Students who apply to study full-time at the IEP can request to receive an I-20 from UAB for the application of an F-1 student visa.
