Taylor Abel, MS, PE

Taylor Abel has been an environmental, health, and safety professional for 20 years. He has spent his career in various businesses of the crop nutrition industry, including mining, manufacturing, and worldwide distribution. He has worked closely with the key stakeholders to build EHS programs, and integrate them into the business to drive a safer work environment and assure compliance. From 2007 to 2011, as Assistant Vice President Health, Safety & Security in Mosaic’s Phosphate Business Unit, Mr. Abel assisted in creation of the company safety strategy and lead its execution in the Business Unit to create a cultural change and significant reduction in injuries. He served as Director of EHS for Mosaic’s global supply chain from 2004 to 2007. Prior to this position he was in various roles in the environmental and safety field at Cargill. Mr. Abel has a BS in Environmental Engineering from University of Florida, a MS in Engineering Management from University of South Florida and is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Florida. He is currently Assistant Vice President for EHS Performance Improvement at The Mosaic Company where he has responsibility for contractor safety programmatic improvements, as well as, leading the implementation of an EHS Management Systems (ISO14001 & OHSAS18001) across the company. He also serves on the State Emergency Response Commission of Florida.

Adele L. Abrams, Esq., CMSP

Adele L. Abrams is an attorney, Certified Mine Safety Professional and trained mediator who is president of the Law Office of Adele L. Abrams P.C. in Beltsville, MD, a nine-attorney firm focusing on safety, health and employment law nationwide. Adele also provides consultation, safety audits and training services to MSHA and OSHA regulated companies. She is also an adjunct faculty member at the Catholic University of America. She is a member of the Maryland, DC and PA Bars, the U.S. District Courts of Maryland and DC, the U.S. Court of Appeals, DC Circuit 3rd Circuit, and 4th Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. She is a graduate of the George Washington University's National Law Center, and earned her BS in Journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park. Kelly A. Bernish

Kelly is the Manager of Safety Services for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. She began her safety career a little over 25 years ago at SeaWorld of Ohio. In 1998, she left her position as EHS Director at SeaWorld and moved to California to accept the position of Safety Manager at the Anheuser-Busch brewery. Two years later, she relocated to Orlando to become EHS director of SeaWorld of Florida parks. In 2009, she assumed her current position. Active in numerous organizations, she is the current chair of Women in Safety Engineering (WISE), a common interest group of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) as well as the Central Florida Chapter ASSE delegate, government affairs chair, and fundraising chair. She is also chair of the Alliance for Central Florida Safety, a grass roots organization that offers free or low cost safety training to businesses in the central Florida region. She serves on the board of a number of organizations, including the United Safety Council, the Ovarian Cancer Alliance, and the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attraction (IAAPA) Safety Committee. She is active in standards writing for ASTM F24 on amusement rides and devices. Kelly is a graduate of Kent State University, a certified occupational specialist, a certified playground inspector, and a certified food safety manager. She has spoken at a variety of safety events around the world, written numerous articles, and is a contributing author and editor of the recently released book, 100 Women Making a Difference in the Safety, Health and Environmental Profession. In 2010, ASSE honored Kelly with the Society’s Diversity in the Safety, Health and Environmental Profession award.

Lisa Capicik is the Regional Safety Director for Brasfield & Gorrie, LLC - East Region. Ms. Capicik oversees field audits reviewing safety programs and suggests improvements to meet best practice standards. She also develops training curriculum, implements and monitors compliance requirements on multiple high-visibility construction projects including guiding her Region to four successful OSHA Partnerships including the first OSHA Partnership for Mobile Workforce in Region IV. Lisa also co-authors in the Silica Matrix design, published by the Georgia Tech OTI Program outlining silica exposures in the construction industry. This publication is currently being reviewed in the Department of Labor's development of a new Silica Standard for Construction. Beth Cooper is an acoustical engineer serving as a subject matter expert in hearing conservation, noise control engineering and acoustics for NASA’s occupational health and engineering communities. Currently, she oversees the site-specific implementation of NASA’s "Buy-Quiet" and "Quiet-by-Design" programs at NASA’s fifteen field centers. Previously, Ms. Cooper directed the conceptual design, construction, NVLAP accreditation, and ongoing operations of the Glenn Acoustical Testing Laboratory and provided noise control design, testing, and training support to help NASA’s science experiment payloads meet International Space Station hearing conservation requirements. She has also managed the development and implementation of Glenn Research Center's hearing conservation and community noise programs and has accomplished numerous noise control projects, including the establishment of three significant NASA acoustical facilities. Ms. Cooper is the President-Elect of the National Hearing Conservation Association. She has served as the Vice President for Board Certification of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering (INCE), as Chair of the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC), and is currently active as a CAOHC-certified Course Director for 20-hour Occupational Hearing Conservation certification courses. She is the author of more than 100 publications and presentations in the areas of hearing loss prevention, noise control, and acoustics and is a frequent presenter and facilitator on noise control and hearing conservation topics. Ms. Cooper is well known in the broader technical community for the development of unique multimedia educational resources that support and energize occupational hearing conservation programs. Ms. Cooper holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Hartford and a M.S. in acoustics from the Pennsylvania State University and has 30 years of professional experience in the field of acoustics, noise control, and hearing conservation.

Prior to joining Fisher & Phillips, Ed was the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health. Named by President George W. Bush to head OSHA, he served from April 2006 to November 2008. During his tenure at OSHA, workplace injury, illness and fatality rates dropped to their lowest levels in recorded history. John (Johnny) A. Gerhart

John Gerhart is the President of 1914 Iron Inc., a consulting company geared toward process control, safety, and operations training and support. John retired from the DuPont Company after 33 years in operations, training, safety and process control. As a chemical board operator who has years of experience in training other board and field operators, John served as the chairperson of the DuPont corporate chemical operator’s network that focused on safety and operational best practices. A member of the DuPont Chemical Workers Association and the United Steelworkers of America for 20 years, John worked to bring understanding of the workers’ needs to management, and was able to voice management’s needs to many workers. John also served as a member and second party auditor of the DuPont phosgene guardian committee, and was a member of several Highly Toxic Material (HTMs) committees. He is an OSHA certified process safety management trainer and technical writer, and has held numerous leadership positions both professionally and within his community.

Kim Greene became Group President of Strategy & External Relations for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in January 2010. Based at TVA’s corporate headquarters in Knoxville, she is responsible for Customer Relations, Environment & Technology, Strategy, Finance & Business Planning, Commercial Operations & Pricing, Government Relations and Communications. Greene had been TVA’s Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of Financial Services since 2007 and became TVA’s Chief Risk Officer in 2008. She came to TVA from Southern Company, where she was senior vice president of finance and treasurer. Greene joined Southern Company Services in 1991 as a mechanical engineer and progressed through various areas of engineering and finance. A native of Knoxville, Greene earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering science and mechanics from the University of Tennessee (UT). She also earned a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a master’s in business administration from Samford University in Birmingham. She has served on the Board of Directors for Energy Insurance Mutual since 2004 and serves as chair of the Audit Committee. Greene also serves as an advisor to the UT College of Engineering and Department of Finance as well as FIRST (For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) – a robotics program whose mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders. She and her husband, Ted, have two daughters.

Deborah Grubbe is owner and principal of Operations and Safety Solutions, LLC, a consultancy which specializes in safety and operations troubleshooting and support. Deborah is the former Vice President of Group Safety and Industrial Hygiene for BP plc, which had its two safest years ever under her tenure. She was trained in the characteristics of safe operations during her 27 year career at DuPont, where she held corporate director positions in safety, operations and engineering. Deborah is a member of the NASA Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel, and served as a consultant on safety culture to the Columbia Shuttle Accident Investigation Board. Deborah currently serves on the Purdue University College of Engineering Dean’s Advisory Council, and is the current Chair of the Institute for Sustainability. She has worked as a member of the oversight committee for the Demilitarization of the US Chemical Weapons Stockpile. Deborah obtained a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering with Highest Distinction from Purdue University, and received a Winston Churchill Fellowship to study chemical engineering at Cambridge University in England. A native of Illinois, she received the Purdue Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award in 2002, and, in that same year, was named “Engineer of the Year” in the State of Delaware.

J. Keith Harris

Chief Harris retired in 2010 as the Fire/Rescue Chief and Emergency Manager for the City of Rocky Mount, NC; his career in local government spanned 32 years. The Rocky Mount Fire Department is recognized as one of the premier departments in the country, and, they are one of only 162 fire/rescue departments worldwide to have earned the International Seal of Accreditation.  Under Chief Harris' leadership the Rocky Mount Fire Department earned an outstanding ISO fire protection rating of Class 2, putting Rocky Mount in the top 1/2 of 1 percent of fire/rescue departments in the United States. Following the devastating floods from Hurricane Floyd in 1999, Chief Harris coordinated disaster recovery programs for his community, overseeing Rocky Mount’s historical FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. Under Chief Harris' management the city relocated over 850 households out of flood-hazard areas. Rocky Mount’s Hazard Mitigation Project was the largest single flood mitigation grant project in United States history representing over $117 million in disaster recovery grants. Since Floyd in 1999 Chief Harris has assisted many other communities with disaster preparedness and recovery including areas impacted by Hurricane Isabel in 2003 and following Hurricanes Ivan, Jean, & Charley in 2004.  Following Hurricane Katrina, Chief Harris was dispatched to the gulf region to help communities in Mississippi and Louisiana organize for recovery. Most recently he served as the NC Long-term Disaster Recovery Manager for the American Red Cross working federally declared disasters from hurricanes, tornados, and floods. Chief Harris has worked on numerous state and national level projects including: Homeland Security Grants, the NC Domestic Preparedness & Response Committee, development of national hurricane drills in coordination with NOAA & the National Weather Service, a flood inundation modeling & alert system for NC, development of a nationally-recognized swift water rescue program for NC, and many other related projects. Chief Keith Harris is currently a Mine Safety Consultant with Business Safety Services, Inc. (BSSI). He has delivered many presentations and workshops across the Southeastern U.S. specializing in hurricanes, floods, severe weather, disaster planning, emergency response, and disaster recovery. Chief Harris is an MSHA approved Instructor for Surface Mining.

Donna S. Heidel, MS, CIH

Donna Heidel coordinates the Prevention through Design (PtD) program at CDC/NIOSH, including the Green, Safe and Healthy Jobs initiative to ensure that occupational health and safety is included in green jobs and sustainability. She coordinates research and facilitates the translation to practice that will reduce occupational injuries and illnesses among workers by eliminating hazards and minimizing risk during the design process. She chairs the PtD Council and fosters collaborative partnerships with labor, industry, government, and other stakeholders. In addition, she coordinates the activities to achieve the five strategic goals identified in the PtD Plan for the National Initiative. Prior to NIOSH, Ms. Heidel gained 20 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry, first at Merck and Co, Inc. and later at Johnson & Johnson. While at Johnson & Johnson, she completed a 2-year international assignment establishing industrial hygiene programs at 42 facilities in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. She also served as World Wide Director of Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Toxicology where she led the development and implementation of their global health hazard and control banding programs. Ms. Heidel has an MS in industrial hygiene from Temple University. She is board-certified in the comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene and is an AIHA fellow.

Deborah Lechner, PT, MS

Lechner is founder and President of ErgoScience, Inc. From 1988 to 1993, she developed and validated a state of the art FCE, the Physical Work Performance Evaluation (PWPE), as part of her research responsibilities as a Research Associate professor with the Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). When the results of the research were found positive, the University of Alabama at Birmingham Research Foundation encouraged her to market the evaluation. ErgoScience® was then formed to commercialize the service. Lechner brings to the FCE process a solid grounding in biomechanics and kinesiology from her experience with computerized gait analysis and instruction in kinesiology. Another powerful influence on her approach to FCE development was her graduate training at the Massachusetts General Institute. The program emphasized standardization, objectivity, reliability and validity in clinical measurement. In the PWPE, as with other ErgoScience® products and courses, she combines her research background with 25+ years of clinical experience. Deborah graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with her BS in Physical Therapy and later received her post-professional masters from the Massachusetts General Institute in Boston.

Allen Long

Long has worked in aerospace for over 30 years, most often specializing in Fault Tree Analysis. He maintains his fault tree analysis website, has written several papers, and was awarded the "Best Conference Paper" and "International System Safety Engineer of the Year" in 1999. Long and co-author Bill Vesely (2002) published “The Role of Fault Trees in Probabilistic Risk Assessment” in the Journal of System Safety. Long resides in Cedar Rapids with his wife and children.

Linda Lucas

Linda C. Lucas became interim provost of UAB in May 2011after serving as dean of the School of Engineering for more than a decade. Lucas, whose research has focused on the development of biomaterials for orthopedic and dental implants, is a senior scientist in the centers for BioMatrix Engineering & Regenerative Medicine and Metabolic Bone Diseases. She also holds joint appointments in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and several departments within the School of Dentistry. Lucas was an inaugural member of the Council of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering and has been president of three international organizations: American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering Society and Society for Biomaterials. She is a Fellow in the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineers and an International Fellow in the Society for Biomaterials. Lucas joined the UAB faculty in 1982 as an assistant professor and was chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering in 1995 until being named dean in 2000. She and her students have published their work in more than 100 publications and presented at more than 250 scientific meetings. Lucas earned bachelor degrees in mathematics and chemistry from University of Alabama and in engineering from UAB; she also earned master’s degrees in engineering, mathematics, and education plus a doctorate in biomedical engineering from UAB.

Roy W. Malone, Jr.

As Director of the Safety and Mission Assurance Directorate at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL, he has responsibility for planning and directing safety, reliability and quality assurance operations for all Marshall programs and projects. Roy started his NASA career in 1994 as a senior technical advisor in the Safety and Mission Assurance Shuttle Integration Office. A native of Virginia Beach, Roy Malone received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1980 from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. He served on active duty with the U.S. Navy from 1980 to 1991, including tours on three U.S. Navy destroyers, one of which included a tour as combat systems officer on the USS Caron during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. He also spent two years at the Pentagon in Washington, where he served on the Joint Chiefs of Staff and in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. He received numerous awards for meritorious achievement and distinguished performance throughout his military career.
 Before joining NASA, from 1991 to 1994, Roy was a senior quality engineer with PRC, Inc., of Huntsville. PRC, Inc. is an engineering and scientific support contractor providing safety, reliability and quality engineering services for the Safety and Mission Assurance Program at the Marshall Center. During his NASA career, Roy has received numerous honors and awards, including a Space Flight Awareness Leadership Recognition Award in 2001. He received a NASA Certificate of Appreciation in 1999 for his role in Marshall's ISO 9000 registration and a Space Flight Awareness Launch Honoree Award in 1993. He also has received numerous Marshall Center Group Achievement Awards, Special Service Awards and Sustained Superior Performance Awards.

Penny Manuel

Penny Manuel began her career at Southern Company in 1982. She spent the first part of her career in engineering, maintenance and fuel positions at Alabama Power plants Gorgas, Miller and Gaston. She has also held various management positions in internal auditing, information technology and human resources. In 2001, she was named chief information officer for Alabama Power and Southern Nuclear. She became the senior production officer for Gulf Power in 2005. Most recently, Manuel held the position of vice president of technical services for Southern Company Generation. Manuel earned a bachelor's degree in materials engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She also has completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

Dr. Shekhar Mitra joined Procter & Gamble in 1984 as a staff scientist and was appointed Senior VP of Global R&D in 2010. He is a member of P&G's Executive Committee, the Global Leadership Council. Charles Peek holds a mechanical engineering degree from Vanderbilt University (1991) and an MBA from UAB (2002). Charles joined AMERICAN as a young process engineer in 1991 and over the last 20 years, he served in various leadership positions in the casting, heat treating and processing of ductile iron pipe. Charles currently holds an executive position as Vice President and Works Manager for AMERICAN’s Manufacturing Division and member of AMERICAN’s Board of Management and Board of Directors. Founded in Birmingham in 1905, ACIPCO is a global manufacturer of industrial and capital goods. Mr. Richey received his BS and MBA degrees from The University of Alabama and completed the Advanced Management Program of Harvard Business School. He was born in Cullman, Alabama and served in the U.S. Army. His civic and community activities include the Business Council of Alabama (Past Chairman); the President’s Cabinet at The University of Alabama; The University of Alabama at Birmingham Leadership Cabinet; serves on the Boards of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Health System, the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation, Newcomen Society of Alabama, Leadership Alabama (Past Chairman), the Birmingham Business Alliance, Alabama Iron & Steel Council (Vice-Chairman); The Boy Scouts of America, Leadership Birmingham, Salvation Army, Alabama Partnership for Children (Past Chairman), and Alabama Department of Archives and History. He is a member of the Alabama Children’s Policy Council and a trustee for the Alabama Council on Economic Education. He served as the Chairman of The Governor’s Commission on Early Learning. Mr. Richey is a member of the Alabama Academy of Honor.

Mark L. Rosenberg, MD, MPP

Mark L. Rosenberg has worked in government, academia, and the private nonprofit sector. Dr. Rosenberg currently serves as President and CEO of the Task Force for Global Health. Before assuming his current position, Dr. Rosenberg served 20 years with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including early work in smallpox eradication, enteric diseases, and HIV/AIDS. He was instrumental in establishing CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) and became the first permanent director in 1994, serving as director and Assistant Surgeon General until 1999. He developed a science-based approach to violence prevention that laid the groundwork for both CDC and the World Health Organization; designed and developed the first Center-based extramural research grant program at CDC; and helped CDC’s injury control budget grow from $500,000 to more than $135,000,000. Dr. Rosenberg has broad experience in medicine and public health, ranging from infectious diseases, to injuries, and mental health. He is board certified in both psychiatry and internal medicine with training in public policy. He was educated at Harvard University where he received his undergraduate degree as well as degrees in public policy and medicine. He completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in infectious diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital, a residency in psychiatry at the Boston Beth Israel Hospital, and a residency in preventive medicine at the CDC. He is on the faculty at Morehouse Medical School, Emory Medical School, and the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University.

Charles A. Shaw, PE

Charlie Shaw is the Corporate Safety and Health Manager for Alabama Power Company. He has over 25 years experience in the electric utility industry in a variety of roles in engineering, operations and safety. Charlie is a graduate of Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and is a registered professional engineer. He is actively involved in several industry groups including the National Electric Safety Code (NESC), Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE), Edison Electric Institute (EEI), and the Southeastern Electric Exchange (SEE). He represents the SEE as a principal on the NESC Sub-committee 8 on Work Rules. He and wife Kim reside in Hoover, AL and he has twin sons, Alex and Eric.

Charles C. "Chuck" Stewart, MBA

With the organization since 1978, Charles C. "Chuck" Stewart serves as President and Chief Operating Officer of Walter Coke and Walter Minerals, two of Walter Energy's subsidiaries. He also has oversight for the Company's operations in West Virginia and Wales. Prior to his current status, Stewart held a number of progressively responsible leadership roles within the Walter Energy group, including Vice President - Operations of Sloss Industries (now Walter Coke) and Vice President - Engineering, General Manager - Purchasing & Materials Control, and General Manager - Safety & Training, all with Jim Walter Resources. Also at JWR, where Stewart began his career with the Company, he worked in multiple engineering and mine management roles. Stewart is a current board member of the Sloss Furnace Museum and a trustee of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, and he has served on several mining and manufacturing boards at both the state and national levels. He holds an M.B.A. degree from Samford University and a bachelor's degree in mineral engineering from the University of Alabama.

Roger H. Sublett, PhD

In April 2003, Dr. Roger H. Sublett, became Union Institute & University’s president. He first joined UI&U as interim vice president for national undergraduate programs in 2001, and a year later was appointed as the university’s chief operating officer. Before joining Union, Dr. Sublett served as the director of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation’s Kellogg National Fellowship/Leadership Program at the foundation’s headquarters in Battle Creek, Michigan. He has authored, co-authored, or edited four books discussing leadership and lessons learned through the Kellogg Foundation, including the latest volume, Leading from the Heart. Dr. Sublett’s prior positions include associate vice president for Academic Affairs, dean of the College of Graduate and Continuing Studies, and director of special programs in the College of Alternative Programs, all at the University of Evansville. He began his career in higher education as a professor of history at Oakland City College in Indiana. He earned his BSE and M.A. degrees from the University of Arkansas, and his PhD with a focus on American history from Tulane University in New Orleans.

Donald W. Swallom, MS

Don Swallom holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Sciences from the United States Air Force Academy and a Master of Science in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. Prior to his current position, he served as a helicopter pilot, staff officer, and developmental engineer in the United States Air Force. His last Air Force assignment was as the chief of safety for the Arnold Engineering Development Center, the world's largest complex of aerospace ground testing facilities. He collaborated on the system safety chapter of the Handbook of Human Systems Integration.

Philip Zicarelli has spent his entire 30 year career in the heavy industrial sector of engineering and construction. Philip has worked in several capacities during his career including positions in engineering, construction, operations, and management. Philip’s experiences include firsthand knowledge of the “full life cycle of safety,” from “safety in design” through construction and operations. He is a graduate of The University of Alabama at Birmingham where he attained undergraduate and graduate degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Philip currently serves as Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Advisory Board, and is Member of the UAB School of Engineering Board of Advisors.
