MASTER of ENGINEERING
Accreditation, Recognition, and Certification
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)
The University of Alabama at Birmingham is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate, masters, doctorate, and professional degrees. Click HERE for additional information on UAB accreditation.
Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET
Typically, graduate programs in Engineering are not EAC/ABET accredited. ABET accreditation of the ASEM concentration of the Masters of Engineering Program through the EAC would require either (1) only accepting students from accredited engineering undergraduate degree programs or (2) requiring students without an accredited engineering undergraduate degree to take extensive baccalaureate-level coursework.
The ASEM Master of Engineering Program will not pursue ABET accreditation due to the diverse backgrounds of its students.
Applied Science Accreditation Commission (ASAC) of ABET
We are not eligible to apply for accreditation through the Applied Science Accreditation Commission because the degree name is Master of Engineering. The Applied Sciences Division will not review any engineering program.
American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE)
ASEM is recognized in ASSE’s Academic Program Directory.
Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP)
ASEM is recognized in BCSP’s Academic Program Directory.
Certified Safety Professional® (CSP®) certification
UAB’s Master of Engineering in ASEM satisfies the academic requirement for the CSP certification.
Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP) program
GSP applicants are required to have a bachelor’s or master’s degree from a program holding safety accreditation by ABET’s Applied Science Accreditation Commission. UAB’s Master of Engineering in ASEM does not satisfy that requirement (see ABET information above).
