Are students accepted only in the fall?
Students are accepted each term. However, students may begin the program only when a sufficient number of students enroll in EGR 610 for the class to be held. For application deadlines, see Applying for Admission
Are transfer credits accepted?
No. The curriculum developed for the ASEM program is unique, innovative, and interconnected, so transfer credits can't be accepted. BACK
How long after I complete the application process will I be notified about whether or not I have been admitted?
Complete applications will be provided to the ASEM Admissions Committee 3-5 days following the application deadline. Applicants will be notified of the Committee's decision within 2-3 weeks. BACK

Is the cost of the program "locked in" once I have been admitted and enrolled?
No. Tuition and fees are established by The University of Alabama Board of Trustees and are subject to change.
Can I take only one course per term?
Can I add and/or drop courses?
Adding or dropping courses after registration is possible each semester. In the fall and spring, students typically have one week after the start of classes to add/drop. In the summer, the length of time varies. Each term's drop/add deadline is identified on the Academic Calendar as well the Registrar channel of BlazerNET.
Can I withdraw from courses?
Graduate students are permitted to withdraw from courses through the last day of classes (see Academic Dates or the Registrar channel of BlazerNET). You will receive a "W" on your academic transcript for each withdrawn course. Please note that cessation of class attendance is not a withdrawal. To withdraw from a course, students must complete the withdrawal process. BACK
If I withdraw from a course, will my tuition and fees be refunded?
No. If you withdraw from a course, you are still responsible for all tuition and fees associated with it (see Student Refunds for more information). BACK
Are the courses self-paced?
Not entirely. Materials and assignments are distributed by learning module, and each assignment has a specific due date. BACK
Will I be able to do the coursework totally on my own schedule or will there be times when I will have to be online at specific days/times?
The majority of the coursework will be done according to your schedule. However, live participation in a minimum number of 1-1.5 hour forums ("Live Classrooms") is required for many of the courses. Live Classrooms are typically held on Sundays from 3:00 PM-4:30 PM U.S. Central Time. Dates and times are subject to change. Students are given some flexibility regarding the number of live classes they attend. While there may be some required classes on specific dates in certain courses (such as a live class at the beginning, middle, and end of the semester) students are given the flexibility to choose the other Live Classroom forums that work with their schedule. This means that students may not necessarily be required to be online in a Live Classroom every Sunday. NOTE: On a case-by-cases basis, students are typically allowed to miss certain Live Classrooms if there is a need. An example of these "free" misses could be an unavoidable work conflict. In those cases faculty will work individually with a student to find a solution.) Participation in an online discussion board will also be required, but you will be able to participate according to your own time frame, as long as comments are made within the assigned time frame.BACK
Will I have to attend any on-campus classes, meetings, or activities?
How long do I have to complete my degree?
Master's degree students are generally expected to complete all degree requirements within 5 years of matriculation. Students can request one extension of the time limit. Requests for an extension must be presented in writing to the ASEM program director for consideration and approval, and they must include a plan and timeline for completion. BACK
What do I do if I'm admitted to the program but am unable to enroll for the admitted term?
You can submit a Request to Defer Admission. Students are eligible for one deferral within a one (1) year period from the original date of admission. If more than one year has elapsed since the original date of admission, the student must submit new application materials. BACK
What happens if I stop taking classes for a while and then want to start back?
Students who do not have an approved leave of absence and do not register for courses for one academic year (3 semesters) must apply for readmission. See the Application for Readmission to Graduate Degree Program for more information. BACK
What is Blackboard Learn?
Blackboard Learn is a Web-based learning management system that provides a standard environment and interface for the development and delivery of Web-enhanced and completely online courses at UAB. BACK
What are the minimum computer system requirements?
You will need a headset with a microphone and a webcam to participate in the Live Classroom Forums. You will also need access to a scanner (some assignments will have to be completed by hand, scanned, and submitted electronically). A high speed connection is not required, but it is very strongly recommended. BACK
In what formats is course content delivered?
Course content is delivered in a wide-range of formats, including documents, PDFs, PowerPoint presentations, video downloads, webcasts, and podcasts. BACK
What types of assignments are given?
Students will have learning module assignments that they complete on their own schedule by a designated deadline. What Graduates Can Offer Employers and Curriculum provide examples of specific assignments. Most courses require live participation in a number of 1-1.5 hour Live Classroom forums. How much interaction will I have with the professor and other students?
Students have weekly contact with their professors and fellow students. Dr. Martha Bidez, Graduate Program Director and Course Master, will also have specified virtual office hours each semester. BACK
Will I have access the UAB's libraries?
Yes. You will have complete access to Mervyn H. Sterne Library and Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences. BACK
What about the Accreditation by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET?
Typically, graduate programs in Engineering are not EAC/ABET accredited. ABET accreditation of the ASEM concentration of the Masters of Engineering Program through the EAC would require either
- only accepting students from accredited engineering undergraduate degree programs or
- requiring students without an accredited engineering undergraduate degree to take extensive baccalaureate-level coursework.
The ASEM Master of Engineering Program will not pursue ABET accreditation due to the diverse backgrounds of its students. BACK
