Construction Engineering Management (CEM) conducts a two-day boot camp for all incoming online students to orient them about UAB, meet their peers and start their path to a Master of Engineering Degree. This fall’s incoming class is the largest ever with forty-four new students starting
their first term of study.

Thirty-eight of the students were able to travel to Birmingham for the 2-day immersion experience and are shown in the photo. CEM started the first online graduate courses in 2009 and the program has continued to grow and gain national recognition.

Dr. Bill Hitchcock from the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering is the Director of the Construction Engineering Management Program. He developed the curriculum which was implemented in the spring term of 2008. Ms. Dianne Gilmer, Instructor and Assistant Director, joined Dr. Hitchcock at the time the Master of Engineering Degree was approved in 2007 and has been directing the student administration and retention efforts from the beginning. Ms. Francoise Lefort joined the CEM support team in 2010 to provide course design instruction and technical support.   Since the program start in 2008, 202 students have earned a Master of Engineering degree with a concentration in Construction Engineering Management. This fall there are 109 students enrolled in CEM courses.

“We are so pleased with the response from prospective students across the nation who want to earn a quality online master’s degree” said Dr. Hitchcock. Dianne Gilmer added, “Each group of students has a personality all its own, and the boot camp experience demonstrates to all of us how powerful a live meeting is before embarking on an 18-month educational journey”.
