UAB senior goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski was selected as the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week for Men's Soccer. Woszczynski played in the net to lift the Blazers to a season-opening, 2-1 victory over Clemson this past Saturday. He faced a total of nine shots (four on goal) and made three saves, all of which were diving stops. The win came in front of 3,141 fans -the most ever to watch a regular season game at West Campus Field.
Brian Mareno of Helena, a senior in the UAB School of Engineering, is the recipient of the Bruce Tucker Memorial Scholarship from the Mississippi Valley branch of the Associated General Contractors of America. The award is given annually to undergraduates with outstanding academic achievements and an interest in the construction area of civil engineering.
“Brian Mareno has achieved the highest aggregate score from all the applicants of the four-year programs,” says Greg Ford, chair of the Bruce Tucker Memorial Scholarship Trust. “He has a great GPA and put a lot of effort into making quality grades in a hard field of study.
Mareno, 24, is the first UAB student to win this scholarship. He has worked full-time in the construction industry since 2005 and is scheduled to graduate May 2012.

Eighth and ninth grade girls began their second week at UAB's School of Engineering studying math, science and engineering through projects and experiments during the Eureka! Teen Achievement Program 2011.
The program is a collaboration of the UAB School of Engineering and Girls Inc.
The Birmingham native from the Department of Materials Sciences and Engineering was also named the School of Engineering’s Outstanding Undergraduate Student Engineer for 2010-11.
