- Biofluids (Hoehn): The primary area of research in the Biofluids laboratory is the study of blood flow in the circulatory system. Cardiovascular flow dynamics has many biomedical applications such as the diagnosis of circulatory ailments and new robust rapid techniques to evaluate blood flow. Hemodynamics is studied by Color Doppler Flow Mapping (CDFM), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Simulated blood flow experiments are also performed and flow dynamics are analyzed by Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV), and numerical simulations. The highly specialized nature of this research is a perfect match for the interests of various laboratories around the UAB campus such as the Echocardiography Laboratory and the Center of Nuclear Imaging Research (CNIR) of the Division of Cardiovascular Disease, the Cardiac Laboratory of the VA Hospital, the Department of Vascular Biology, the Department of Radiology and others.
- Biosurfaces Laboratory (251 Hoehn): FTIR/analytical microscope, Cahn dynamic contact angle, Perkin Elmer-3030B atomic absorption spectroscopy with graphite furnace, surface preparation (grinding & polishing equipment)
- Implant Biochemistry Laboratory: The Implant Biochemistry Laboratory in the Biomedical Implant Center supports research focused on the interactions of implant materials with bone and soft tissues. Ongoing research projects include: mechanisms of toxicity of metallic ions; cellular responses to calcium phosphate coatings; biosynthesis of extracellular matrix molecules on implant metals; and adsorption of biomolecules to implant surfaces. The Laboratory (approx. 250 sq. ft.) is equipped with a variable wavelength plate reader, darkroom, and apparatus for gel electrophoresis and column chromatography. Adjacent to the Biochemistry Laboratory is a tissue culture laboratory (150 sq. ft.) equipped with a laminar flow hood, phase contrast microscope, liquid scintillation counter, and CO2 incubators.
- Biodegradation Laboratory (259 Hoehn): Three ED&G DC potentionstat/galvanostats, AC impedence spectroscope, Farraday cage/environmental chamber, various corrosion cell designs, IEEE 488.2 data acquistion (GPIB) hardware and software, constant composition kinetic degradation equipment for evaluation degradation of biocermaics.
- Muscoloskeletal Mechanics Laboratory (270C Hoehn): Three MTS - mechanical test frames, drop tower, fatigue tester, wear simulator; Extensive finite element analysis capability exists utilizing dedicated computer workstations (SUN and SGI), software packages include ABAQUS (finite element analysis), PDA/PATRAN (pre- and post processor for finite element).
- Tissue Engineering Laboratories (261, 261 A-C Hoehn): Cell culture laboratories include a laminar flow tissue culture hood, three water jacket continuous flow incubators, sterilizers, a Nikon diaphot transmission/reflected light microscope with phase contrast and bright filed capabilities, Olympus stereomicroscope with mangification up to 3000X, Beckman (LS 5000) liquid scintillation counter and a Skatron cell harvester.
- Wound Assessment Laboratory (250 Hoehn): Laser Scanner: A Lisa scanning laser doppler is capable of providing a 2D blood perfusion map of a 3 x 3 cm tissue specimen; Dimensional Analysis System: The DAS mechanical test system can provide in situ mechanical data. ED digitizer: The 3D digitizer provides the 3D coordinates of a object rolling over its surface. This information can be used to obtain volume and surface area measurements of wounds.
- Electron Optics Laboratory (159 BEC): Phillips 515 SEM/EDS/WDS with Kevex x-ray analyses, Scanning AES (Auger electron spectroscopy), JOEL 150kV TEM with an ion miller, Norelco x-ray diffractometer with softward including high speed search-match of the full JDPDS file
- Implant Retrieval Laboratory (Basement Laboratories LHR): Histology facilities are available to embed, section, and stain both hard and soft tissue specimens.
- Osteoblast Biocompatibility Laboratory (3rd floor, Webb): Complete facilities are available for conducting osteoblast cultures on implant materials.
- Dental Biomaterials Laboratory (6th floor, School of Dentistry): Materials processing equipment, sputter coater for producing bioactive ceramic coatings
