Experience

Dr. Hitchcock has a wide range of experience including five years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 22 years as a senior executive in energy transmission and storage companies; and over six years of teaching experience at Texas A&M University and UAB combined. Dr. Hitchcock's expertise is in the area of energy infrastructure, structural mechanics, and construction engineering management.

Research

Dr. Hitchcock's expertise includes in depth knowledge of the energy infrastructure and the interdependencies of critical infrastructure. He is particularly interested in the important roles civil engineering firms and construction companies have in infrastructure design, protection, and repair or replacement after disasters. Dr. Hitchcock is also interested in the continued development of computer aided construction management and visualization tools.

Current Research

  • A comprehensive study of all modes of the transportation infrastructure in Alabama focused on the vulnerabilities and interdependencies and the development of educational materials to explain the system. This project is funded by the University Transportation Center for Alabama (UTCA).
  • A study of the historical and current processes for handling the emergency reconstruction of critical transportation infrastructure in Alabama.
