The Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) Honors Program presents an opportunity for highly motivated undergraduate students to develop research skills in preparation for graduate school and professional work.

Acceptance into the CCEE Honors program for entering freshemen requires:

  • that entering freshmen have:
    • a minimum High School GPA of 3.25/4.00 on academic subjects,
    • a minimum ACT score of 24 (or SAT equivalent), and
    • an interview with the undergraduate honors admission committee, or department chair.
  • that students currently enrolled, or with previous college experience have:
    • completed at least 18 hours at UAB, with an earned 3.25 GPA in those courses.
    • an earned 3.00 GPA overall, and
    • an interview with the undergraduate honors admission committee, or department chair.

Although not required, students can also be simultaneously enrolled in the university honors program.

  • maintain the minimum GPA stardards (see above),
  • arrange with a faculty mentor in CCEE to direct their research,
  • a minimum of 6 credit hours in Honors Research (CE 440) leading to a completed formal written technical report and a formal oral presentation of their work at a regional technical conference, if possible, or a formal presentation at a departmental seminar, and
  • a minimum of 3 credit hours in EGR 301 Honors Research (1 hour), and CE 441 CE Honors Seminar (2 hours).

The above 9 credit hours of honors classes are in addition to the general undergraduate electives. These electives are selected in consultation with their departmental research mentor.

The six (6) hours of Honors research will count as one elective in the CE program as long as there is a completed written technical report and it has been presented in a formal setup.

Departmental honors students will work closely with graduate student and faculty researchers at a level that is uncommon fro undergraduates. This experience will develop confidence and independence, plus give the student important experience in communication and research skills. Students who successfully complete the above requirements will graduate “With Honors in Civil Engineering” noted on their transcript and on the commencement program, and will receive a special certificate at the spring UAB Honors Convocation.
