The Enabling Technology Laboratory (ETLab) is a research-oriented group within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Established in 2002, ETLab consists of a group of faculty members, programmers, graduate and undergraduate students. Its mission is to develop immersive virtual reality for visualization, education, and training, especially engineering, science, and health. The ETLab maintains the VisCube, a multi-screen, immersive 3-dimensional display. The VisCube is what enables the ETLab to create new possibilities for virtual reality, including mixed-reality environments for education and training. Other capabilities at the ETLab include medical image processing, 3D imaging acquisition, and high performance computing. These research projects are funded by industry and federal institutions, including NASA, DOD, DOE, NSF and NIH. Most of all, the Enabling Technology Laboratory is where discoveries are made, a new generation of scientists are trained, and where the fun of work starts.
