The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), a joint department of the School of Medicine and the School of Engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), invites applications from highly qualified individuals for tenure-earning and tenured positions at the rank of Assistant to full Professor, based on experience and qualifications. Positions require an earned doctoral degree or equivalent in biomedical engineering or related field. To be competitive for a tenured position, candidates must be nationally recognized for their scholarship and research, and commitment to education. Tenure-eligible candidates must have an outstanding vision for independent research and commitment to education.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at UAB was founded in 1979 in the School of Engineering, and in 2014 became a joint department of the School of Engineering and the School of Medicine. The joint department facilitates a strong culture of collaboration, collegiality, and excellence in scholarship, research, and education. The department has a strong record of extramurally funded interdisciplinary research with emphasis in cardiovascular tissue engineering, cardiac electrophysiology, biomaterials, biomechanics, biomedical implants & devices, biomedical imaging, computational biology, drug delivery, and regenerative medicine. Presently, the BME department offers degree programs leading to Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees.

Candidates who join this exciting environment must be committed to developing a robust extramurally funded research program, teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and involvement in service activities to the University and the profession. The successful candidate must have strong communication skills and be able to collaborate with colleagues and participate in ongoing departmental programs.

The BME department currently consists of 20 full-time faculty members, 35 graduate and 245 undergraduate students, and active grants and contracts totaling approximately $6.5M for FY16.

The successful candidate is expected to develop an interdisciplinary research and training program that complements and expands ongoing programs in BME and other collaborative centers at UAB.
