Dale Callahan is an entrepreneur who has started many successful companies.   Dale has recently written a book, Resumes are Worthless. Dale sits on the advisory boards for TechBirmingham and the Alabama Information Technology Association. He is a member of the National Speakers Association. Dale was recognized in 2011 as one of UAB's 40 School of Engineering Graduates Making A Difference and received the 2013 UAB Graduate School Dean's Award for Excellence in Mentorship.  Dale is the recipient of the 2015 IEEE Region 3 Joseph M. Biedenbach Outstanding Engineering Educator Award for his work in establishing UAB’s IEM Program.

Don Appleby

Systems Engineer, Faculty, Author


Don Appleby is a technology consultant with nearly four decades of experience in enterprise system design, implementation, and support.  He is retired from IBM, where he held positions in systems engineering, product sales, technical sales support, software defect support, billable services, technical project management, and quality assurance processes.  He has also authored papers and spoken at conferences on the subject of solution assurance methodologies.  

Mr. Appleby has been an instructor in the UAB School of Engineering since 2004, teaching courses in the IEM track of the Master of Engineering Program.  He is also the author of Effective Speaking: An Introvert’s Guide to Making Presentations.

Mr. Appleby holds a BSIM degree (with highest honor) from the Georgia Institute of Technology and an MSEE from UAB.

Brian M. Rabon, CSM, CSP, MSEE, PMP is the president of The Braintrust Consulting Group, a provider of project management solutions for a wide range of software related projects. Rabon holds a BS in computer science from Auburn University and a MSEE from UAB. He is an avid author, blogger and speaker at conferences, professional organizations, and user groups. Rabon is also a contract instructor for New Horizons Birmingham and Solutions Cube Group, and he works as a course designer for Samford University. Rabon gives back to the community by serving on the board of directors for TechBirmingham, as VP of Programs for PMI Birmingham, and as the founder of Agile Birmingham.

Maria Whitmire, a UAB employee since 1993, currently serves on the Business Technologies Advisory Board for Lawson State Community College and the AOM/ACS/HRM/IT Advisory Board at Virginia College. Whitmire is involved with the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) and has served as the president of both the Birmingham Chapter and Alabama Division.  She has received numerous awards for her work in IAAP including Member of Excellence.  She regularly teaches classes for UAB employees through their Human Resource Management—Organizational Development Department.

Jennifer Skjellum is president and owner of Runtime Computing Solutions, LLC., a state-of-the art company that provides software and solutions for the high-performance and embedded computing space. Her previous company, MPI Software Technology, was a profitable software and services company that was acquired in 2003. Skjellum has extensive experience teaching courses in communication theory, public speaking, and business communication. She is also active in her community as a volunteer for Junior Achievement. In 2008 she was the chairperson of TechBirmingham and continues to serve on its executive committee and board of directors. The Birmingham Business Journalawarded Skjellum the Top 40 under 40 in February, 2009.

IEM Faculty, PMP, Strategy Consultant for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama

Chris Johnson, PMP is a Strategy Consultant for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama with 25 plus years of IT experience. Chris is a great builder of professionals. During the years of 1999-2000, he was the elected President of the Leadership Development Association, a private organization of around 800 professionals in the Birmingham area. Chris is often sought out in his company as a speaker, with his latest effort as a guest speaker at a National conference for all of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield licensees. He is widely regarded as an accomplished communicator, negotiator, and diplomat. Chris holds a BS in Computer Science and a Master’s degree in Engineering from the University of Alabama Birmingham. Chris is also active in the business community in Birmingham, Alabama. He is a member of the Birmingham Chapter of the Project Management Institute, a member of TechBirmingham, and a member of the state chapter of HIMSS.


Denise Jeffries

Denise Jeffries is senior vice president of enterprise data services at Regions Financial Corporation.

Jeffries is a proponent for data warehousing and business intelligence technologies; she is a contributing member of TechBirmingham and is actively involved in UAB's IEEE Alumni group and the UAB Information Engineering School. She holds a masters in IEM from UAB, master's certifications from The Data Warehousing Institute, The Data Management Assn and the Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals, as well as a Six Sigma Green Belt from the University of Michigan Management School and is CMMI v1.1 certified through Carnegie Mellon University.
