Undergraduate Program

Student performing experiment in lab.The students will become familiar with wide spectrum of materials world. Besides classroom learning, the students are trained with technical skills through laboratory classes, research experience in research laboratories led by the faculties, and internships and co-ops in industries. The students develop their professional skill by active engagement with the UAB student chapters of various professional societies and participating in outreach activities. The program also offers B. S. degree in Materials Science and Engineering with the student’s choice of concentrations in Biomaterials, Metallurgy, and Polymer Martix Composites. After graduation, you can either start your professional career or pursue higher studies.

Honors Program

Students are invited to participate in the departmental honors program on the condition of a 3.25 GPA and completion of EGR 265: Math Tools for Engineering Problem Solving or equivalent. Honors programs require nine credit hours above the 128 hours required for a bachelors degree.

Requirements

  • Students must enroll in the one-credit EGR 301 Honors Research I course, which "introduces students to research methodology, ethics, data analysis, and technical communication." The course also helps students to identify a research mentor. This course is offered only in the fall and is preferably taken junior year.
  • Students must enroll in two one-hour departmental seminars (MSE 496). This can be done during any two semesters—fall or spring—in their course of study.
  • Students must complete six hours of credit in honors research (MSE 497) under the direction of an MSE faculty mentor.

Program Credit

  • Completion of the departmental honors program with a B or better average satisfies three credits of either a Materials Engineering elective or an Engineering/Math/Science elective.
  • Honors research beyond the required six hours can be applied as graduate credit.
