Welcome to Undergraduate Studies in English at UAB. Whether you are enrolled in a first-year composition class, fulfilling your UAB core, or working toward a major or minor in our department, we're here to meet your needs.
Our Mission
Committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service, the Department of English of the University of Alabama at Birmingham prepares students to read perceptively, think analytically, and develop effective writing skills essential to a literate society. To advance the mission of an urban research university, our department serves UAB and greater Birmingham by elucidating the structure and history of language, promoting creative expression, and providing an understanding of diverse literary traditions for a multicultural community.
Our Offerings
The UAB English Department offers not only a Bachelor of Arts in English, where students pursue the study of American, African American, British/Irish, and world literatures written in English, but also a Bachelor of Arts in English with any of the following specializations:
- Concentration in Creative Writing
- Concentration in Linguistics
- Concentration in Professional Writing and Public Discourse
In addition, the Department offers the following minors:
Qualified English majors are invited to apply to the English Honors Program.
