The Minor in Writing

The minor in writing provides intensive studies in the theory and practice of rhetoric and composition, offering students the opportunity to achieve expertise in all aspects of critical writing, from the composing process to primary and secondary research methods to the critical analysis of texts from every discipline. Designed for students interested in working in a wide-ranging variety of fields, including careers in business and graduate studies in all majors, the minor in writing teaches students skills that are important to writing both in college and in their future career paths.

Requirements

'Old' catalog (2009-2010):

To earn a minor in writing under the 2009-2010 catalog, a student must complete a total of at least 18 semester hours in addition to EH 101 and 102. These 18 hours should include:

  • Two courses (6 hours) from EH 203, EH 301, or EH 303
  • One course (3 hours) from any linguistics course at the 200 or 300 level OR from any creative writing course at the 300 level
  • One or two courses (3-6 hours) from EH 304, EH 311 when approved, 403, 404, or 492 when approved
  • One or two courses (3-6 hours) from EH 401, 402, 457, 459, or 492 when approved.

Two of these courses (6 credit hours) must be at the 400 level. Students must achieve a grade of C or higher in all courses applied toward the minor, and at least 12 hours of English courses at the 300 and 400 levels must be taken at UAB.

'New' catalog (2010-2011):

  • Two courses (6 hours) from EH 203, EH 301, or EH 303
  • One or two courses (3-6 hours) from EH 304, EH 311 when approved, EH 403, EH 404, EH 433, or EH 492 when approved
  • One or two courses (3-6 hours) from EH 401, EH 402, EH 456, EH 457, EH 459, or EH 492 when approved
  • One writing elective (3 hours; see catalog for list of approved courses)
