Dr.
Callahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama. He received his
Bachelor of Arts degree from Birmingham-Southern, Birmingham,
Alabama in 1967, and graduated from the University of Alabama
School of Medicine-Birmingham in 1971. He served an internship
at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, Department of Medicine
in 1972, and completed residency in ophthalmology at the University
of California - San Francisco in 1975. He completed fellowships
in Pediatric Ophthalmology, Indiana University School of Medicine,
Indianapolis, Indiana, July-October, 1975; Phacoemulsification
and Anterior Segment Surgery with Dr. Charles D. Kelman, Manhattan
Eye and Ear Hospitals, New York City, New York in October
- December, 1975; Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
with Dr. Alston Callahan, Eye Foundation Hospital, Birmingham,
Alabama in 1976.
Dr. Callahan
has been a member of the UAB Department of Ophthalmology since
1992. He has been a Trustee of the Eye Foundation Hospital,
Inc. since 1976. Recently he was appointed to the Board of
the Alabama Eye Institute, Inc.. Dr. Callahan is certified
by the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Society
of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
