Biography

 

Dr. Witherspoon received his Doctor of Medicine degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1977. He served as a medical intern at St. Mary's Medical Center in the St. Louis, Missouri Department of Medicine in 1978, and completed a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham/Eye Foundation Hospital in 1981. He completed a retina fellowship at the Vitreoretinal Research Foundation in Memphis, Tennessee in 1982, prior to returning to Birmingham.

Dr. Witherspoon has been a member of the UAB Department of Ophthalmology since 1982. Dr. Witherspoon is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, The Vitreous Society, American Medical Association, Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER), Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), Medical Association of the State of Alabama (MASA), Jefferson County Medical Society, Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB), and Southern Medical Association.
