MG 3444 smallTo complement the upgrade completed in 2015, UAB’s Department of Energy Management completed work in its ongoing lighting retrofit project at Bartow Arena with the assistance of funding from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA).

A $10,000 award was made to UAB through ADECA’s Non-Profit Energy Improvement program. The grant allowed for purchase and installation of 75 above-audience and concourse lights. The new LED lights provide better quality light and reduce energy costs, with an estimated payback period of 2.5 years.

“Supplying energy to the Bartow Arena costs UAB more than $500,000 per year, and a significant portion of that cost is in lighting,” said Matt Winslett, Engineering Manager for Facilities Division’s Energy Management. “It is our intention to improve the quality of light, reduce energy usage, and reduce the impacts of energy use and production on the environment through a comprehensive LED retrofit program.”

This project again required the help from the Facilities Division’s Campus Maintenance Department. The crew worked after hours to complete the job in less than a week.

Bartow Arena is now fitted with LED lights over the court, above the audience and in the concourse, helping to offset utility costs for the university and providing a better fan experience.
