UAB faculty helping students save money
BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - UAB faculty are doing what they can to lower the cost of college for some of their students.
“Faculty can’t do a lot about the price of college, but depending on what textbooks they assign and what efforts they make, they might be able to make the textbooks less expensive,” said Scott Phillips, UAB Center for Teaching and Learning.
Faculty members in 14 different departments at UAB have been using what’s known as affordable instructional material grants or AIMs.
This allows them to not necessarily use the traditional textbooks but instead create online material, rent textbooks or use older editions.
The program is administered through the UAB Centers for Teaching and Learning, and has benefited over 10,000 students saving over $1 million.
“I don’t have to spend a thousand dollars on books every semester which has been a huge blessing to me. It’s helped me not have to take out financial aid loans,” said UAB student Anna Jones.
"This ensures students can save some money. Money they’ll actually feel and they’ll realize they save that money and they’ll do better in classes,” said Brian Moon, associate director for academic innovation at the centers for teaching and learning.
