Faculty Recruitment Advertisement Content Requirements—The Essential Elements

All faculty recruitment advertisements must include the following elements:

  1. The advertisement must include rank and tenure status. It is preferable to include whether the position is full-time or part-time and the appointment period, i.e. nine-month or twelve-month.

    • The University of Alabama at Birmingham invites applications for both tenure track and non-tenure earning positions, at the Assistant Professor/ Associate Professor/Professor level. Rank, salary and tenure status commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  2. An advertisement must include the UAB minimum requirements for the position; however, preferred attributes can also be included.
    • ... seeking an individual with an advanced degree in the medical sciences with postdoctoral experience and research interests in ...
    • A successful track record of grant-funding is preferred, but not required.
    • Proficiency in ...is preferred.
  3. The educational level must be included. Type of degree should be noted unless implied by responsibilities or board certifications, i.e. patient care, clinical care. Again, UAB's minimum requirements for the position must be conveyed; expressly stating that the degree must be awarded by an accredited institution.

  4. Experience is an essential item for the advertisement. Include minimum number of years and/or type of experience. Again, preferred attributes can be noted.

    • Applicants should have substantial professional work experience in one or more of the teaching areas ...
  5. Provide the link/URL to UAB PeopleAdmin where applicants can apply for the faculty position.  Ex: Qualified applicants please follow this link to apply: http://uab.peopleadmin.com/postings/1564 - Or, another example: Interested individuals are encouraged to apply online at http://uab.peopleadmin.com/postings/1530 - Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

  6. Note: Your UAB PeopleAdmin Recruitment Requisition (which becomes your posting on UAB Faculty Jobs and HigherEdJobs.com; there the requisition should indicate which documents the candidates will need to apply:
    • Research Agenda
    • Curriculum Vitae
    • Letter of Recommendation
    • Cover Letter
    • Statement of Teaching Philosophy

    • All faculty advertisements must include the following language:

      “A pre-employment background investigation is performed on candidates selected for employment.”
  9. Drug and Nicotine Screen (if applicable)
    “Physicians and other clinical faculty candidates who will be employed by the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation (UAHSF) or other UAB Medicine entities, must successfully complete a pre-employment drug and nicotine screen to be hired.”
  10. Specific department name when applicable.

  11. School, Department, Division, and Program name Minimum Education, Credential Requirements, and licensure requirements.

Phase I

Recruitment & Hiring

  • Receive approval from Dean to initiate faculty search.
  • Submit Faculty Recruitment Request in UAB PeopleAdmin.
  • Postion posted Faculty Jobs site and HEJ.
  • Place recruitment advertisement in journals, publications, media sources, etc. for minimum of 30 days.
  • Candidates apply to UAB PeopleAdmin
  • Faculty Search Committee will review, evaluate, and interview candidates.
  • Finalist candidate selection is made.
  • Hiring propsal is initiated in UAB PeopleAdmin; routed for approval.
  • Offer is extended to candidate.

Phase II

Appointment

  • Obtain signed Offer Letter from candidate.
  • Complete Form I-9.
  • Complete Oracle ACT Document.
  • Complete UAB Faculty Data Form.
  • Obtain candidate's official transcript(s).
  • Initiate Background Check Process
  • Credentialing (if applicable)
  • Obtain/verify professional/board licensure (if applicable).

Phase III

  • One Card (PreHire)
  • School/College/UAB Libraries Onboarding and Orientation processes to be completed
