Ten workshops comprise the Teaching Innovation Series. Dr. Tino Unlap, a highly regarded educator who holds a faculty appointment in the UAB School of Health Professions, leads each workshop. Workshops usually occur on the same day of the week at the same time each semester at the Learning Resource Center or the Center for Teaching and Learning. See below for time, date, and location info for this semester. Participation in each workshop earns attendees 10,000 Gold points and a Teaching Innovation Series Badge. Additionally, homework will be assigned in each workshop that can be completed for 5,000 Green points. Click here for more information on CTL points, badges, and teaching certification. Now that You Will Be Teaching—What’s Next?
First impressions in the classroom are important and lasting. Getting off to a good start is the focus of this workshop.

Developing Your Teaching Philosophy
What you think about teaching impacts how you go about it. This session starts you on the path to developing a personal philosophy of teaching that is the anchor for the professional resource known as a teaching portfolio.

Basic Skills for Teaching
These are the essential skills and techniques to develop them. These include presentation and communication but also involve how to interpret student responses, read your audience and adapt accordingly.

Organizing an Effective Lecture Presentation

There is an inverse relationship between the amount of information presented and the amount retained. It is to your students' advantage to have leaner, concise presentations and you will find it easier to give the presentation. We will examine how to decide what gets included or cut when preparing your presentation and the most efficient way to communicate content.

Effective Use of Team Teaching
This workshop will discuss when team teaching makes sense and practical ways to implement this approach.

The Use of Scholarship to Enhance Teaching
Your own research and scholarship can be a valuable enhancement to your course. We will discuss how to weave your scholarship into your teaching. The related theme of including applications of concepts and course material will be demonstrated with practical examples.

Seven Habits of the Most Successful Teachers
What do you think are the seven habits most closely associated with successful teachers? Find out in this engaging workshop.

How to Write Good Test Questions We will examine techniques for increasing test construction efficiency and grading. These techniques help ensure questions assess student mastery of course objectives. Creation of different types of questions will be discussed including techniques such as structured white space and abbreviated critical thinking as well as multiple choice and multiple answer. 

Teaching by Full Application
Every graduate deserves to learn how to identify and solve problems regardless of major. Dr. Tino Unlap, an experienced teacher, mentor, and researcher, will explain his approach to "full application" problem-solving to enhance student skills for independent thinking and long-term retention of learning.

Elevating One’s Teaching to the Synthesis and Evaluation Levels 
Tino Unlap Most educators want to challenge students with course activities that are higher than knowledge and comprehension levels of the cognitive domain of Bloom’s taxonomy for learning but we often fall short when we review our content. Join us for some tips and examples of how to efficiently transform existing material into activities at the application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation levels.
