Freshman Discussion Media Package

Freshman Discussion Media Package

Click the above link to a media package for you to read, watch, and listen to before you arrive on campus in August.  2013 is the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 50th anniversary of civil rights events in Birmingham that changed the city and the nation. There will be many events—music, lectures, art, theater—on campus, and around the city, to celebrate and commemorate these anniversaries. The College of Arts and Sciences is also running a number of special classes in honor of this year. This media package will help to introduce you to these events and classes.

It consists of two texts — the "Students" section of Mahatma Gandhi's Constructive Program, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "Letter from a Birmingham Jail"—introduced by two professors who are experts on the materials.

In the package, also, are three music videos: Miles Davis's "So What," Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready," and the Staples Singers' "Freedom Highway." These music videos are introduced by three professors, also experts on the music they will speak to you about.
