The Institut für deutsche Sprache provides links for diverse German software available for downloading from the internet.

PracTest , by Prof. Gary Smith, is a template for creating fill-in-the-blank exercises or tests with the capability to add help text to specific items a student use of the program. (Instructions for how to obtain and install PracTest on your computer)

The Vocabulary Tutor , a shareware product for Win95, practices German vocabulary by association.

eWeb is a commercial site which allows teachers to create their own interactive web exercises. No knowledge of HTML etc. is needed to quickly create high-quality exercises.

Puzzlemaker creates crossword puzzles and word searches on-line.

The German Electronic Textbook by Professor Gary Smith includes explanations of German grammar for the beginning level. It also contains a pronounciation component.

German Internet Exercises provides a compilation of links with web-based lessons (language, culture and literature) by German teachers.

Peter Gölz has developed a distance learning course with interactive grammar exercises based on Treffpunkt Deutsch: Deutsch online

Texthaus is a commercial site which offers a variety of on-line, interactive German courses for German students. The exercises are glossed and evaluated.

Paperball is a meta search engine which will conduct searches by topic/categories in a number of on-line newspapers.

Miscellaneous

Information on Theodor Storm in English

Anne Green's site contains an overwiew about the books "Ein Sommer, ein Anfang", "Damals war es Friedrich", and "Brandstiftung", plus word lists, questions and further links. Damals war es Friedrich is the tragic story of a young Jewish boy in Germany during the thirties, as seen through the eyes of a friend. In candid, simple words, this modern classic of juvenile fiction tells of a single Jewish family's destruction during the Holocaust. A chronology traces German anti-Jewish laws and regulations announced from 1933 to the end of World War II. - The material website contains detailed suggestionss for a variety of activities, as well as guidelines for teaching about the Holocaust.

Jugendinfo is a site which contains sections on subjects such as friendship, relationships, money, and school. Julia Cooley, a HS teacher in Hampton, VA, wrote, "The text is not too difficult to read, and my students enjoy reading the articles and learning idioms that aren't in their boring old textbook."
